I haven't touched, barely even THOUGHT of Magic: The Gathering over the last five or so years. The last time I even considered it, was while I was at Great Escape to buy something else entirely, and flipped through their binder of cards from the new set, stunned by the changes they had made to the game. And even before that, the last time I bought a booster pack was, I think, in 2000. The only official record I have of having played is a promo-card to a 1999 pre-release.
Anyway, I got to thinking about it while we were in Dublin, when I saw an advertisement for "M:tG 2010 Edition" and some of the artwork caught my eye. So I went home and did a search for the art and, to some degree, started getting caught up in the over-the-top, melodramatic, dizzyingly high fantasy setting. Which got me thinking about my old days playing magic.
So looking for card lists somehow lands me at an online store. And that lands me looking through the price guide for some of the cards I have...
Needless to say, it's a shock to find cards that I could have bought for $15, and even then that felt a little over-priced, going for $50-$70. Let alone cards pulled out of a booster, and one that was even given to me because it was a "gimmick" rare that no-one wanted and I happened to like, going for $20-$30. Or an uncommon that was going for $3, again, going for $20.
My original plan was to stitch together a deck or two, then sell the rest. Only problem is that the decks I wanted to keep use several of the high-priced cards. But I'd likely only play with them once or twice a year and it just seems silly, and somewhat selfish, not to go ahead and sell them. Then there's also the simple question of appreciation. When I had stopped playing magic back in the turn of the millennium, I had expected the game to simply fade away. I come back to find that it might well be bigger than it has ever been before. How do I know my old cards won't continue to go up in value?
Anyway, I still need to go back to my parents and look around some more, since there are cards I remember having that I just can't seem to find anymore. Ones that I didn't think I sold. It's possible, mind you, because it was close to ten years ago, and I also have a few cards I didn't remember having. Like a "Type-2 Extended" (Which they call "Legacy," now, I think.) legal red and blue counter/zap 'em deck.
Any magic-players out there that have any thoughts on this?
