So I've always wondered what exactly was the basis of the Ben Folds song
"One Down." "I've got one I finished yesterday, and I've got 3.6 to go."

It was always pretty obvious it was about submitting songs because you have to, rather than because you're proud of them.
"People tell me Ben,
just make up junk and turn it in.
But i never was alright with turning in
a bunch of shit"

Last night in concert, he mentioned that in order to be paid his retainer, he has to turn in a certain amount of songs to the record company on a regular basis. Around the time of the Rockin the Suburbs record, he was living off the royalties and happily ignoring the record company, who suspended him (stopped paying the retainer).

Suddenly, he had a kid on the way, and realised he needed that money back. So he calls the record company and asks "how many songs behind am i, exactly?" They went away and checked the records... and came back with "4.6."

It got me to wondering what exactly were those 4.6 songs he submitted back in 2001.

Listed on the "Joey's guide to Ben Folds Five B-sides" are, very conveniently, 5 B-sides which were released shortly after "Rockin the Suburbs"

They are:
-One down (no way man)
-Girl (a song i've never quite understood, it sounds like the backstreet boys)
-The Secret Life of Morgan Davis (sounds like a broadway song, i've always loved this)
-Hiro's Song (still never heard this...)
and
-Make me mommy (hilarious punk-esque song i've never heard before)

Looks like he really did turn in a bunch of shit. But just like with his "fake album", due to his talent it all ends up being awesome stuff. That guy really annoys me.

Bonus:
Ben Folds ruining a heckler's shit:
