Gamer Review: Ninja Gaiden Sigma

Oct 07, 2009 23:38

Okay gaiz, this is the first of probably like. Three reviews I will write rofl. Nah, I'll probably do more, but you know me! I get bored easily and I'll probably forget to write in this.

Also, please note, that not all games I review I have beaten. This one, for example. But I do TRY to beat most games, and if I think I may play a game further, I wont write a review until I'm basically sure I'm through with it. Like I am with this game. -__- But okay, onto the review!

Okay so. I rented this game pretty much purely for the fact that recently Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 came out and the commercials looked pretty and I love a man with swords. I have also played Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword for the DS and found it positively charming. But what games for the DS aren't charming?

It had been some time since I played NG:DS and had never really considered renting NGS until 2 came out, so I figured what the hay! I love ninja games (or at least I love Tenchu lol). So I figured I'd give it a shot. Also, part of me wanted to play it solely because right around the time we had rented NG:DS my brother had rented NGS and claimed it sucked because it was too hard.

Which to me, doesn't make a game suck. It just makes me frustrated and I'll usually give up. Does it mean I hate the game? No. I just wind up getting annoyed and give up. But that doesn't mean it sucked. It means I sucked.

So anyway, onto the game itself.

I sat down to play it and really, the first thing I noticed, was the funny American voice acting done for what I imagined to be a far more Asian place. I'm pretty sure it was a fictitious world (but what do I know? I failed geography!) but it was set in a very japan/china like setting. So American voice actors, to me, were probably not the best choice. Or at least American sounding American voice actors. Come on ninja's aren't American. -__-;

But, that wouldn't spoil me, I honestly am not that picky, it just made me lol a little bit. The graphics were good, the music irked me a little just in the sense that it had a lot of random loud noises so I would constantly be like SHIT GUYS ARE COMING but they weren't. But, I guess maybe that was the point, as it's a similar theme in the Resident Evil games I've played, a well placed random noise could be certain to startle you.

Graphics were pretty good. Could have been better. During cinematics they were nice, but just seemed like on a 1080p resolution I should have gotten a little more. I could just been inherently picky but, hey, I have my preferences.

As far as gameplay went the controls were very smooth and fluid which is a big plus in a game for me, I can't stand janky controls, my only biff was operating the camera some of the time. I'd find myself running in circles on accident because of the camera shifting on its own and that gets on my nerves but also, not a problem really, you get used to it over time.

But due to the actual game content, it didn't really get that much time. .__.

Now, when I think of ninjas, I think of sneak-up-behind-you-slit-your-throat kinda guys. Where you creep around in the dark and through bushes to SURPRISE your prey. NGS however, was not this. Honestly, to me, it seemed much more like it should be titled "Samurai Gaiden Sigma" because there was absolutely NO stealth what-so-ever in this game. As a matter of fact, guys just rushed you. They weren't waiting around dawdling. They'd just appear from no where and head straight for Ryu so even if I went out of my way in attempts to be stealthy (which honestly would not happen) it would be pointless since the enemy is pre-programed to know where you are. :/

But! That was just a little bit frustrating! Hey, I'm all for hack and slash! I love it! So, while I wanted the sneak-up-behind-you-slit-your-throat sort of game, I was willing to flop for the come-here-you-little-bitches-and-imma-cut-you-up deal. Fine with me.

But. As much as it pains me. My brother was right. This game was HARD. Now, maybe I just suck ass, and maybe you guys would find it simple, but when it comes to fast paced action games I'm not usually thinking too heavily on my combo attacks. I have to admit I'm more of the button masher kind of gal. And in this game it really wasn't a very good option. Certain enemies were susceptible to certain combination's and I'm sorry but I don't have all the free brainspace to memorize all those combos. I need a RAM upgrade before I can even comprehend keeping all those sequences in my head. Not to mention, to me, it seemed like the combos were nearly impossible to complete. I was constantly like "SQUARE, SQUARE--shityoufuckerthanksforbreakingmycombo."

Eventually, I figured out how to block, which was a GOD SEND in the beginning.

But I.

Am not.

A defensive person.

I am offenseoffenseoffense. If I'm playing a game that literally REQUIRES you to block, it's looking like a flop for me. I mean, I don't mind blocking, but if it is something I have to do at every spare second, it's annoying to me. I had this problem with Golden Axe, there was so much blocking and you had to remember buttons in reference to the color of the enemies aura, that shit just was not happening.

And then, as it would happen, as you progressed the enemies got undeniably harder. First they started grabbing me whilst in a defensive pose and slitting my throat (HEY I WANNA DO THAT!) which takes down a huge chunk of your health. Then enemies started throwing sticky bombs at me which beat the shit out of my defense and my health bar.

I don't even want to recount my many deaths and how they all occurred.

At one point, I was doing a side mission where you had to beat seemingly endless amounts of enemies, all of which are coming and slitting your throat or hitting you with unavoidable rocket launchers and as the guide I was referencing said, this was a simple challenge! If that was a "simple" challenge, well, needless to say, I was fucked. Eventually I started doing wall runs to avoid being hit, and slashing down to decapitate my foe, but that only worked until the guys with the rocket launchers come along, and they all still have guns so while I'm making decent headway (haha headway. get it? decapitation? headway?) they're still whittling away my health with their little pistols and then big explosions start happening and well. Lets just say I never finished that mission and instead simply continued on.

I like to think I gave this game an honest try, but really, when you're dying 10+ times trying to accomplish ONE thing... I think its safe to say you should just stop playing.

I managed to accomplish 4 chapters out of I believe 31 and well... I had seen enough. There is the slightest chance on the planet that if I have a ton of free time, I may give it a second go around, but during school? I'd rather play something that is a little more relaxed and a lot less frustrating.

HOWEVER I AM PLEASED TO NOTE THAT... while I feel as though I sucked copious amounts of ass at this game, I completely three of four chapters with the rating "Master Ninja" and the other one "Greater Ninja" SO. Idk. Idek.
