DAY ONE
Opening his eyes, Aoi took a look around the room he had entered only moments before. Taking it all in, he sat in the only empty seat left in the room. The room was mostly filled with teenage boys of all ages, but there were a few girls situated in their seats throughout the room. One gender definitely outweighed the other. Aoi shifted in his seat and looked down at ground before him. The girl to the left of him glanced over his way before looking towards the adult who started to speak.
“Well, it looks like everyone is here…” She lifted herself up from her seat and looked around the room, at everyone’s faces before speaking again. “Let’s start by introducing ourselves. My name is Ren, and I am this camp director. I’m sure most of you know what kind of camp this is, but if not and your parents have just dropped you here, I’ll explain it to you.
This camp is a conversion camp. We take young youth who have come to believe that they are wrongfully homosexual and help convert them back to heterosexuality, so that they may live a fulfilling life with their future heterosexual spouse and their family. We all hope that you will benefit from this experience and choose the right path,” Ren finished with a smile and sat down before starting to speak again.
“Let’s start with you,” she looked to her left, towards a boy who appeared to be only thirteen years of age.
He was short, and clearly nervous being around so many people. He pushed his thinly framed glasses back against the bridge of his nose, and looked up at the people around him, moving his hovering black hair away from his eyes. He stood up and started to introduce himself. “H-hi…my name is Kiyoshi and my parents brought me here because they saw me holding hands with my friend. I-I don’t know if I’m gay or not, since I’m so young, but--”
“Your parents made the right decision, Kiyoshi.” Ren interrupted It’s best to stop this sort of behaviour before you’re old. Let’s have the next person introduce themselves.” And with that, Kiyoshi sat down and another boy stood up.
Aoi was in shock by Ren’s response to Kiyoshi’s introduction and how she cut him off just like that. He had no idea how strict this place could possibly be, and now he had to stay here for a week, doing nothing but being taught how to pretend to be straight. He hadn’t realized that his mouth was gaping, and he closed it instantly as he realized the next person was introducing himself. The next boy was fifteen; his hair dyed a light shade of brown. He was almost the same height as the boy who had gone before him, despite being a few years ahead of him. Aoi stopped listening until the boy who was across stood up. He didn’t notice his presence until he rose from his chair, looking directly into Aoi’s eyes. He was tall and lanky, and Aoi couldn’t help but notice that he was absolutely beautiful. Aoi’s heart skipped a beat as the other boy pushed a strand of honey blond hair behind his ears as he started speak.
“My name is Kouyou, but um, you can call me Uruha if you want. It’s kind of a nickname, but I don’t really like my real name,” Uruha shrugged and pushed his thickly black rimmed glasses against the bridge of his nose, a common mannerism here, Aoi had noted. “I guess…I guess I’m here because my parents walked in on me with my friend’s limp dick in my mouth. My dad was supportive, but my mum was, uh, a sobbing mess, I guess. She didn’t want me to be like my estranged uncle. So that’s my story.” He shrugged again and sat back in his seat, folding his arms across his chest.
Aoi bit his lip, trying to hide his laughter from hearing Uruha’s very honest introduction, to which Uruha had noticed and smirked to himself, before looking over as the girl beside him started to speak. Aoi looked back at the ground as he noticed that his cheeks were turning warm, keeping his eyes there until it was his turn to speak.
When it was finally his turn to introduce himself, Aoi stood up and averted his gaze from the floor, looking straight ahead of him, as Uruha smiled slightly at him. Aoi felt a similar warmth run to his cheeks again. He cleared his throat before starting to speak, his voice soft.
“My name is Aoi…well, actually it’s Yuu, but I go by Aoi. At least, my friends call me Aoi…” he scratched the side of his head and licked his lips before starting to speak again. “I’m here because I forgot to clear my browser history on the computer I share with my mother,” Aoi stared at the ground and looked up as he heard a laugh erupt from across the room. He looked up, and saw Uruha with tears falling from his eyes as he slapped his thigh.
“Y-you forgot to clear your history…o-oh my god, that’s fucking classic.” Uruha wiped his eyes from under his glasses and tried to control his laughter as Aoi blushed and sat down almost instantaneously.
As Aoi sat down again and Uruha settled, the girl to Aoi’s left introduced herself, followed by everyone else in the circle. Aoi looked down at the floor as the others spoke, glancing up only occasionally to see that Uruha was staring and smiling at him. Every time he looked, his heart fluttered. Knots tangled themselves in the pit of his stomach and his palms started to sweat. He wasn’t in love or anything, he was just really fucking nervous that someone he had barely met was fucking staring at him with a shit-eating grin painted across his face.
Or, at least, that’s what he told himself. He never believed in love at first sight, but anything could happen…or that was Aoi’s conviction. There was no way he was getting flustered like a girl with a crush over a guy. It seemed impossible to him, but there he was, chewing nervously on his lower lip and pulling his sleeves of his jumper down over his clammy hands. The knots in his stomach tightened like Yuu’s stomach was practice for them to earn their Boy Scout Knot Tying Badge. He smiled inwardly at the analogy, amused by the thought. But those thoughts were interrupted when he saw a pair of shoes walking across the floor in his peripheral vision.
“Hey, you,” a voice called out to him and tapped a rolled up booklet on his head. “You’re my roommate.” To that Aoi looked up and saw the guy that had mesmerized him to the point of Boy Scout knot tying. He swallowed hard and averted his attention.
“I-is that so?” He questioned, completely dumbfounded. “That’s nice, I guess.”
“…you guess. Alright, glad to know my company is appreciated.” Uruha frowned in fake hurt. “You were so zoned out, you completely missed everything Ren said, dude. She called your name five times and you didn’t even budge, you kept fiddling with your fucking sleeves.”
Aoi blinked in surprise and looked directly at Uruha before standing up. “I didn’t even notice. I was lost in thought-”
“Save your excuses for someone who cares. I wanna see our room and find out if I’ll be able to jerk off peacefully.” Before Aoi could even allow his face to make an expression of shock, Uruha grabbed his wrist and dragged Aoi out of the room where everyone was once gathered and down a corridor. Aoi cringed at the pressure on his wrist, but made no movement to free himself from himself from Uruha’s vice-grip around his wrist. The walk seemed long and the tugging seemed to last for too long for Aoi to bear.
“Do you even know what room we’re in, Uruha?” Aoi breathed out, seemingly out of breath due to the rushed, forced physical activity.
“Of course I do!” Uruha let out a huff and unrolled the booklet and checked the number before continuing to drag Aoi down the corridor. “We’re almost there, okay?”
Aoi whined in protest as Uruha’s grip tightened around his wrist, but just as the whined escaped his lips, Uruha had stopped and stared at the door in front of him.
7.
“I guess this is our room,” Uruha let go of Aoi’s wrist and smiled at him. “Home for the week~” Uruha sang and open the door forcefully, quickly looking around. Aoi cautiously followed in after Uruha, and groped the wall for the light switch. The flick of the switch brought a horrible fluorescent glow to the room, but revealed all of its contents.
And that’s when Uruha burst out into laughter.
“Th-they only gave us one bed…at a fucking conversion camp, they gave two boys one bed. Holy shit, this place is fucking priceless…” Uruha wiped his eyes with a chuckle and gave the room a once-over again.
“…at least they gave us a box spring.” Yuu muttered as he looked at the box spring that should have been supporting a mattress before looking around, hoping there as a mattress hiding somewhere in the room.
“How fucking considerate of them,” Uruha rolled his eyes before he let out a small sigh. “I hope this isn’t a stupid fucking test or anything. I don’t really wanna share a bed with someone who can’t even clear his search history. No offense or anything.”
“…none taken. I’m gonna go check if the other rooms have an extra mattress or anything.” Aoi felt the knots untangle in his stomach and drop, a surmountable weight holding itself in the core of his abdomen. He left the room in a hurry, quickly walking to the next one and knocking on the door.
The door opened and a nervous looking girl peer through the crack. Aoi stared at her briefly as he gathered his courage to ask her the silliest question.
“…hey. Does your room have two beds?” He asked with a sheepish smile which had plastered itself across his face in an attempt to comfort the skittish girl before him.
“Yes. Why?” The girl looked up at him with furrowed brows, curious as to what could’ve possibly happened to have this seemingly random question spurred out at her. She was already nervous as she could possibly be, but the question seemed to put her on more of an edge, at least to Aoi.
“Uh…no reason. Don’t worry about it. Thanks.” Aoi bowed slightly before leaving the room, hearing the click of the door close behind him as he walked back to his room, face to face with Uruha who had already made himself comfortable on the one bed in the room.
“So? One bed or two?” He asked as he folded one leg over the other, letting his left foot dangle aimlessly in the air.
“Uh…they have two,” Aoi scratched at his upper arm through the sleeves of his jumper and looked away from Uruha, whose eyes seemed to be penetrating his very soul. “I’ll sleep in the bathtub or something.”
“There is no bathtub. Just a shower with two shower heads. Honestly, this room is so fucked up it’s kind of making me question the sanity of some of the construction workers and the interior design people these days,” Uruha sat up and looked right at Aoi, hoping to make eye contact with him despite the fact that his right cheek was turned to his direction. “We won’t mention it to the ‘camp leaders’-” Uruha made an air quote motion, implying weight in the sarcastic tone in his voice. “We’ll just keep it quiet, alright? I don’t wanna start shit and have people walking in and out of our room trying to fit a bloody mattress in here. I’ll put a pillow in between us, because I am oh-so courteous.” Uruha punctuated his last few words with his hand tossing his hair over his shoulder, in an effeminate manner that confused Aoi just a bit.
At a loss for words, Aoi just accepted the proposal of sharing a bed with someone he barely knows, someone who sent blood to his cheeks and butterflies flitting in his stomach, within only minutes of knowing him. And this wasn’t the way this was supposed to be, the way this goddamn camp was supposed to function.
Aoi knew that from this point on, he would not succeed at meeting the goals that the camp and his mother had placed on him. Not one bit.
