So I got to Longy around 11:50 for my 12:45 audition. I had specifically asked for a 9:30 or a 1:30 audition in order to be able to have Mihail there, but they told me that they were only running auditions from 10-1 (which is the exact time of the BSO rehearsal.) I was told that they would video tape it, which is fine, I know that sometimes the faculty can't be there, but whatever. When I got there I would say there were about 10 faculty members in the performance hall doing auditions. When I got there I actually missed the sign in area because it seemed sort of unorganized. I went to reception and they brought me back to the area where there was someone to check me in.
Roxana came around 12:00 and we were told we could look for a practice room, but one would be available 30 minutes before the audition....and the auditions were running LATE. (GRRR). Eventually we got a warm-up room (there are 250 students and 20 practice rooms) and at 12:42 someone came to our room and told us the faculty decided to take a break and my audition would be delayed (GRRR). The thing that's so weird about that is there were only 2 more auditions scheduled for the day, why not just push through?
I ended up going on stage at about 1:10 or so, and there were three faculty members. I recognized 2 of them from my longy suzuki audition 2 years previous (which was schetchy to me because isn't the suzuki division part of the community division???) The third was the wife of a cello faculty member that teaches violin there. She approached me later ad told me she really enjoyed my audition and she was sorry that her husband missed it, but he had to teach at Hartt that day. I felt better seeing her there, but aside from that I found the lack of faculty a little weird. Why not stay for 2 more auditions?? And best of all? I didn't see ANY recording devices. Schetchy....
I felt the audition went well, and in retrospect I wish I'd applied for a APD not a GPD. With an APD I"m sure I would have had a lot more faculty present (there is a special day set aside for this type of audition) and there would be no classwork for me to do. I think that the Worst case scenario would be that they tell me that they can't offer me a APD but they could possibly offer a GPD, right? I feel that the opinion of the violin teacher will probably carry the most weight, but when it comes down to it, I don't' want to study with her husband. Politics are politics...It will be very interesting to see what happens. I"m sure I played a pretty strong audition, but if no one is there to hear it, what does it matter???
So that's about it. I've done a lot of thinking on the matter and I"m not sure I'd really want the degree anyhow. I"ve spent the last few years doing most of the work by myself. Now I have someone to tweek my excerpts for me, but even he said I don't have any bad habits, so why do I really need another degree? I just need a job, and I"m en-route to start taking the auditions, so do I want to pollute my time with student chamber and orchestral obligations? Probably not. So the choice? If I get a full ride, I get free lessons but more obligations. If I don't go, I pay for my lessons but don't have to go into Cambridge as much.
Juries out.
