[Merlin immediately knows something's wrong before he even opens his eyes - for one thing, the bed he's lying on is incredibly soft, rather than the hard cot he usually sleeps on. For another, there's a gnawing emptiness inside of him when he tries to reach for his magic and figure out what's going on.

[ Hey Merlin. Somebody's waaaatchin' you. ]

... Whatever it is you're trying to do, it probably won't work.

[A wide-eyed, guilty look.]

I wasn't trying to do anything! [Beat, and then sulkier:] Nothing happened, anyway.

[spellbent]

You must be new here.

[destinyrests]

[Wryly.] That obvious?

[spellbent]

Painfully.

[ just. holds out a piece of paper ] Read this.

[destinyrests]

[It takes him a couple of minutes to get through it, but at the end, he's scrubbing the back of his head anxiously.]

Right, then. That's...interesting. And not good at all. No one's found a way out yet? Has anyone gotten close?

[spellbent]

Now there's an understatement.

And no, not to my knowledge. Our captors keep dropping little hints here and there, but that's about it.

[destinyrests]

Why are we even here in the first place? There's got to be some reason for it.

[spellbent]

Probably, but no one knows what that is either.

Though there's a rumor that this town is powered by the souls of others.

[destinyrests]

By souls? [A horrified shudder.] There's got to be some kind of focus they're using to do that then, something we can destroy...we can't just let them get away with that!
