For the past two years, my parents have been involved heavily with an organization called Semper Fi which is a group started by the mother of a soldier sent to Iraq to fight. He died there, ironically, HBO captured it on tape for a show they were doing. They have her son's last moments on tape.
My father met her through work, he's the post master at the post office she uses, and got involved with sending the soldiers in Iraq not only Christmas gifts, stockings, letters, and cards but also phone cards so they can call home and old cell phones people don't need anymore to hook them up with sim cards so they can call at their leisure.
All month, they've had collected items dropped off from various people and gone to several schools in the area to pick up what the students had collected. There's everything from DVD's to shaving cream, candy to socks. Boxes and boxes of stuff. You can't imagine the generosity and this is just from one community. I can only imagine and hope this is going on in other cities as well.
Today, both my parents took all the items down to the mall in my dad's pick up truck to sit in center court and wrap everything, pack it for shipping, and collect last minute donations. They have stockings prepared for over 300 local soldiers and items for even more.
I'm just really proud of them right now and I'm not even flocking this post because it deserves to be public. If anyone wants to write to a soldier, or send gifts, it's never too late. There are probably Semper Fi's in your area but if you can't find one, here's the web site for the one here in the Hudson Valley, NY.
