[After finishing her duties with the Rivermen for the day, Calaria finds herself outside the Temple of Alexander, standing by the river. Strange. She was never really into water, even though Gelveer was surrounded by it, but after signing up with the Rivermen, she found it to be calming. Her duties with the Rivermen provided a distraction from her ( Read more... )

After his mishap with Zell a week ago, Jeice was heading towards his favorite spot to eat a sandwich, one that would hopefully be more edible than the one last time. This time he had made sure to sneak off unnoticed, so no pesky Brandies would follow him and eat his food.

There was only one problem though. His favorite bench wasn't exactly occupied, but his view of the river from the bench was obscured by some woman in green. Of all the rotten luck... he made a great show of collapsing into the bench, with the wood groaning beneath him, threatening to finally give out. It didn't, however, and Jeice gave a sigh of relief.

Calaria gasped and whirled to look behind her. Sitting on a bench was a man with a dark hat and a long face. He wasn't THAT bad-looking, though. Oh come on.

Who is he? Calaria thought. Probably one of the locals.

She waited for him to introduce himself first.

Suddenly Jeice found himself the object of attention, which for most people, would be the moment he would introduce himself and apologize for the near incident of breaking the bench. But damned if this wasn't Jeice's one time of the day he enjoyed most, so he wasn't going to have some woman he'd never seen before spoil it. He began eating his sandwich very deliberately, fixing his attention two feet to the right and one foot above the woman. There was still river in that direction, but he couldn't see the dock where all the gulls liked to congregate.

Calaria was still waiting for this newcomer to introduce himself to her. She wasn't about to let him know who she was first. She made a somewhat obvious show of coughing into her hands, just to get his attention.

He had been doing his best to ignore her, but he choked on his sandwich when she started coughing. It was not a reaction from him suddenly realizing how rude he was being (she was the one blocking his spot after all), but a gag reflex at the possibility she might be carrying some sort of disease. A disease he might now have. After a fit of choking, he finally down the food, but tears were now in his eyes and his face drenched in sweat.

Well, his day was just about ruined now. Might as well make it worse. "Went down the wrong pipe," he said weakly.

Way for her inner sense of compassion to kick in right now. She groaned inwardly and approached the man.

"Are you okay?" she asked. Just making sure he was okay. That's all. This was in no way her fault! His fault he choked on his sandwich.

Jeice wiped his sleeve across his face, taking away most of the tears and sweat, just leaving his face with a nice glistening effect that did nothing to improve his looks. On the plus side, he could see his spot now. On the down side, the gulls weren't even there and now she was talking to him.

"I'm breathing," Jeice said in a very unconvincing raspy voice.

"I can see that," the mage replied dryly. Typical people. Well, might as well get right down to it.

"I take it you live here in Eldonsorth?" Calaria asked.

"That's right," Jeice answered after taking a swig from his flask to clear his throat up a bit. "I work over yonder." His thumb jerked back behind him indicating that he might work in any part of the eastern part of the city.

"Where, specifically?" Calaria asked. She started to realize that he seemed similar to her. Well, just in the fact that he seemed not to trust people at first, too. Maybe something happened to him in his own youth that made him this way? Probably. That's all it is.

"Mind if I sit here?" she asked, waving her hand to the spot next to him on the bench. At least he wouldn't have to keep looking up at her.

Jeice always hated having to say he worked at the temple, because then he would have to specify that he worked with the Order. If he did that, people would be all interested and ask him all sorts of questions and wonder why he wasn't such a model devout. So he decided to stretch the truth to be more convenient. "I make sandiches," he explained. This was partly the truth, because today he had made his sandwich. Which is why he was so disappointed she had arrived to ruin his intimate time with his lunch.

"Sure, go ahead." He moved over just a bit to give her room on the bench. Already he could tell she was one of those people who were nothing like him. She seemed to be genuinely interested in him and actually like people. Why did they have to be so common in Eldonsorth? Holy city indeed.... "So... what do you do?"

"You... make sandwiches? For a living?" It wasn't that odd of an occupation, but no one would really go out and admit it. At least, not that she knew of. Then again, she did live in Gelveer, where people were haughty like that.

"What do I do?" Should she tell him? She put her index finger to her lipts, thinking about it. She shrugged. Guess there's no harm in it. "I work for the Eldon Rivermen. You know, the ferry service?"

Jeice gave a noncommittal shrug. "It's the only food I make worth eating. You don't want to try my stew. I don't like eating my stew." He was suddenly reminded of many cold nights eating pitiful attempts at trying to make supper with overcooked rodents.

"Oh, I've heard of them. Took a trip with them when I left Gelveer," Jeice answered. "I didn't know they were still around."

"So I take it you're a cook of some kind?" That would make more sense.

Gelveer. This man was from Gelveer? No. He could have just visited there. "You're familiar with Gelveer?"

"If by cook, you mean I occasionally make edible food, then that would be an apt description," Jeice replied.

Now he regretted bring up Gelveer. No doubt she herself was some sort of Gelveer native who would be delighted to have a fellow snob to laugh it up with. The proper execution of blunt honesty should do the trick. "I was thrown out of the magical academy."

The shock of hearing that he had been thrown out of the Academy in Gelveer caused her to overlook what he had been saying about edible food. She had heard rumors about this, but she was never one to believe in gossip--mostly because the gossip she heard had been about her.

If he was looking, he'd have seen a shadow pass over her face before she moved her lips to the right in a grimaced kind of expression. "So the rumors were true..." Calaria murmured.
