Writing Group

Today i went to my first writing group meeting. It was interesting. I didn't really know what to expect in terms of people at a Barns and Noble writing group. The store doesn't sponsor it, but they allow meetings to be held every sunday morning and give us folding chairs to use.

I would say that the average age was about 55 without me there, though i think there were only 2 as young as their 30s. I would say a good quarter of them were in their late 70s to early 80s, and they were Old Hollywood. The group has been around at least since 1993 and the woman who started it has been trying to write her memoir for that long. From what i can tell, she was a hollywood singer/actress for Fox Studios, who did her more exciting work in Mexico. None of these older women were big stars, but they were part of the big old studio system. Though i must admit that our leaders writing is really dry, but the subject is interesting. There was another layer that were in their 50s around my parents age, in that group there was a published playwright, a movie critic, and 2 women who looked older than they probably were, perhaps they were or had been anorexic, their bodies looked shriveled and fragile, but they didn't really look old. The two youngest i would place in their 30s a brother and sister. The brother was a very tall, attractive black doctor with short braid dreds, and bright green eyes, he reminded me a little of the guy on CSI Los Vegas, wasn't him different ethnic mix and different coloring, but similar striking appearance. His sister was probably the closest to my age, she was a teacher, and she was working on writing a teen novel. I didn't get a really clear introduction to them all but they welcomed me in. I think this could be an interesting partnership.

I had to laugh, because in my last writing group. I wrote a script that centered around an almost all female cast, and the class was almost entirely male, they did a great job with the readings, but i fear that this time around everyone might have to be played by little old ladies who used to be prima donnas.
