Before I get to this, I have to say that I was watching Road to Perdition last night, and trying to figure out why the kid playing Tom Hanks' son looked so familiar. And when I finally figured out he grew up and sold his soul to MTV to be the popular werewolf on Teen Wolf, I wished I could forget it again.
misspamela asked me: give me three memorable books you read this year!
I didn't run across any of those couldn't-put-it-down type of novels this year, but there are three books I did think were lovely.
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate - a middle-grade-ish book about a gorilla named Ivan, who lives in a small enclosure in a mall. The book is told from his point of view, and it's the most poignant, amazing thing I read all year. Also one of two books that made me cry.
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker - As the earth's rotation slows and time begins to have little meaning, life still goes on against the backdrop of disaster. Told through the recollections of a woman named Julia who was ten at the time of the change, the book details the way the world changed for her in both global and personal ways.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz - this is the other book which made me cry. It's a book about two teenage boys and their relationship. It has a very distinctive narrative POV, and though the reader figures out long what's agitating/motivating the POV character long before he does himself, it's still a brilliant and beautiful book about love.
