On Veterans Day

A few things to think about.

- There is one surviving American WW I veteran. One. He is 107 years old. His name is Frank Buckles, and he was present at the very first Veterans Day. Today he paid tribute to those who served in WW I, because he is the only one of his comrades left to stand for them.

- Every day, it's estimated that 900 WW II veterans die, and it's also estimated that half a million will pass away every year, in the next few years. There is an organization, Honor Flight, dedicated to flying WW II veterans and terminally ill vets to Washington, DC for free, to see the WW II Memorial, and to honor their service. They are always looking for volunteers to stand in the airport when the soldiers depart for the memorial, and to welcome them home and honor them with cheers when they return. There are other things they need, too. It's worth checking out.

- There are a number of organizations dedicated to assisting veterans. Two of them you might consider supporting: Wounded Warrior Project and Air Compassion for Veterans. There is also the Transition Training Academy.

- Every Veterans Day, I make myself cry with vagabondage's vid 1916. What really touches me about the vid is the reminder that there are millions of men and women buried across the world whose sacrifices, and names, have been forgotten. And I think that makes it all the more important to honor the sacrifices of those who are still with us.

honoring others, helping others, life
