Summary: He wasn't expecting to actually fall for anyone.
Rain
Athens, Ohio is far more interesting than Dean first gave it credit for.
Not that the gig didn't interest him to begin with. A haunted sorority always spells a good time. All those girls need protecting, after all. Even if the flirting is half hearted, the view is nice and Dean has always appreciated a pretty face.
He wasn't expecting to actually fall for anyone.
Cassie is like a breath of fresh air. Things had been tense between him and his dad for a long time now. They hunted apart as often as they hunted together anymore. So when he meets Cassie early on in the hunt and spins her a half thought out line of bullshit and then she calls him on it… Dean doesn't get called on his bullshit a lot; only a few people have ever done that to him, so he's instantly interested, despite himself. Besides, his dad's silence gets far less disapproving whenever Dean spends the evening chatting up a pretty girl;
And Cassie is definitely a pretty girl. She has these sharp, definite features and this strong jaw that she's not afraid to stick out there. But she's more than just a pretty face. Cassie is funny in this snarky, kind of mean way, and she cares about people without even trying, without thinking about it. And she's so god damned smart. Smarter than anyone Dean's talked to for a while but she doesn't make him feel like some two bit high school drop out, even though that's just what he is.
Cassie refuses to laugh at anything he says for the first three days they know each other. Dean is ashamed to admit he'd been following her around like some sort of overeager puppy. There's just something about this girl that makes him feel the need to start jumping through hoops. So for three days, whenever he's not helping his dad work the case, he's trying to charm a smile from this girl and failing miserably.
Dean finally succeeds in his little self appointed mission on the third day. He's brought the Impala by campus, hoping to impress 'cause who could resist his girl? The only thing is it's late April in the Midwest so the Impala is slick with an earlier shower and Dean ends up on his ass when he tries to lean against her.
That's what finally breaks Cassie's vaguely pissy, you're not fooling anyone expression and she ends up doubled over laughing as he rubs his backside, trying to decide if he should want to crawl into a hole and hide or grin like a fool.
She lets him take her out to a college bar and buy her drinks and Cassie teases him mercilessly the entire time, doesn't even let him change his jeans because, "it's only a bit of water, princess, don't know what you're getting your panties all in a twist over." She matches him shot for shot long enough to impress him and when Dean drives her back to campus, she kisses him without any coyness.
It's his first kiss in the better part of a year. He kind of wishes his dad was watching and that's a weird thing to think when kissing a pretty girl. The kiss is awkward but they're both tipsy enough that it can be blamed on that.
Cassie invites him back to her dorm and Dean panics and declines like the giant pussy he is. But Cassie looks absolutely delighted, like he just passed some sort of test. She kisses him again and then she's out of the car and jogging down the path to her dorm, weaving dangerously towards the edge of the path.
Dean's lucky he doesn't drive off the road on the way back to the motel. If his dad notices his change in mood or behavior, he doesn't mention it.
Their relationship is the definition of a whirlwind romance. A week after meeting Cassie and Dean is in her bed.
It's as if he hasn't been with someone for years. In a way, Dean hasn't. It's been nearly four years since he's taken a woman to bed with him. It feels natural enough, like riding a bike, but at the same time, he has to relearn everything. Touching a woman is just different.
Afterwards, he lies there with Cassie in his arms and marvels at how small she is, comparatively. He runs his hand down her side and notices more than appreciates the curve to her waist and the swell to her hip. Her hair is just the length he's used to, if far more voluminous. His hand stands out where it rests against her, the contrast in their skin tones too distinct even in the dark, making him extremely aware of where he ends and she begins.
He barely sleeps and when he leaves the next morning, he heads directly to a diner. His dad is already there, so Dean has to make his way over to his booth and plop down across from him. He's very aware that he smells vaguely of sex and that there's a hickey below his right ear. But his dad doesn't scowl or tell him off for getting laid on the job. If anything, he looks like he's proud of Dean. And, more than that, he's actually looking.
Dean spends that night with Cassie too. And the next. Until the job is done, he spends every night with Cassie and her mocking smile and warm brown eyes.
But there are still girls in a sorority being terrorized by the ghosts of pledges past and they can't just ignore that. He and dad take care of the problem, just over two weeks in Athens and then it's time to pack up and leave town.
The thing is, Dean really likes Cassie. He can't put his finger on it, but there's something about her that just draws him in. He likes it when she teases him or when she puts him in his place. He likes that she won't take his bullshit, will throw it back in his face and make him face facts. He likes that she's passionate about what she believes in and will chase after what's right. What he doesn't like is that he's lying to her.
For just this reason, the day that they're set to move on, he takes Cassie to the edge of campus where there are all these old trees and stone benches and he tells her the family secret because there's no real other way to excuse taking off for extended periods of time.
He expects disbelief but he doesn't expect anger or accusation. He most certainly doesn't expect outright aggression.
On the way back to the motel, Dean has to pull over because he's actually crying, out and out crying like he hasn't done for six months. And when he remembers the day it is - when he remembers that it's May second already, six months to the day of the last time he cried at all like this - he cries harder.
He's collected, for the most part, when he makes it back to his and dad's room and if his dad looks at him funny, well, at least he's looking.
