Chapter 1

Gerard's POV

I sat slouched at my desk, and my arms crossed over my chest, watching the clock, counting down the time until I am out of here.

1 minute 45 seconds

I look over to my right and see Frank sitting just like I am, staring down the clock.

"Hey Frankie?" I ask but above a whisper, doing my best to stay out of ear shot from the teacher. She always was such a bitch. "You think between the both of us that if we stare at the clock long enough we can make time fly?"

He just looks at me like I'm nuts, but lets out an inward laugh.

"Last I checked we weren't warlocks, but I'm game." He stares down at his phone and starts pushing buttons before flipping it shut and tossing it in his backpack. "I need to get the hell out of here. Matt and I have plans tonight and I have to get my speech done for tomorrow and I'm not even half way done with it yet."

If you haven't guessed already, my best friend Frank is gay. Has been since the day I met him. Came right out and said it. Said he didn't have time to be somebody he's not just to make a friend, so he was trying a different approach. He never said anything to us, but I think that might be one of the reasons why he moved here in the first place. The place where it was normal to be fucked up.

"Well, I got it done yesterday." I say, sounding like the biggest geek ever. What kid works on a speech two days before it's due? Me, that's who. "I had nothing better to do. Lorelai was with Chloe, Mikey was with Lucy and Ray's never around as much as he used to. To busy trying to find Mrs. Toro."

Good ole Ray. He told us all that he was going to find Mrs. Ray Toro by the end of the year. Says he wants to be married and start a family right out of collage. Says he doesn't want to be 40 some years old while carrying a baby on his hip - his words, not mine.

1 minute 15 seconds

"I think he found her, he just doesn't know it yet."

"I'll have to punch you if you say it's you."

"No! I have a boyfriend, thank you very much. I was talking about our favorite girl in the whole wide world."

There was only one girl who was in our 'gang' and that's Delilah. The girl that could get you to do just about anything, just with the bat of her eyelashes. She could tell you the sky was purple and you would belive her. She was that convincing.

"Delilah?" Here I thought I was the only one who thought that. Glad to know I was wrong.

"Yeah. Come on, don't tell me you weren't thinking the same thing."

"Actually, I've been thinking the same thing ever since we were kids. But, I mean, come on. Ray and Delilah are complete opposites."

"Haven't you ever heard that saying before? Opposite attracts my friend." He's got that right.

"Yeah. So what are you and Matt doing?" To be honest. Matt is a subject I'd love to avoid. He's the first guy that Frank hasn't brought around for us to meet, so right there, I already don't like him. I get the impression that either Matt thinks he's too good for us, or he doesn't agree with Frankie's choice in friends.

"Dinner and a movie."

45 seconds

"When are we going to meet this new boyfriend of yours? You talk about him all the time." He does. Sometimes it gets old. Like playing a broken record. It repeats the same part over and over again until someone shuts it off. Sometimes I wish Frankie had an off switch.

"I don't know. When will you ever meet who I'm seeing and not scare them away?"

"I don't scare them away. It's not my fault they dump you after meeting me."

"Yes, it is. They all say the same thing to me before they leave."

"What's that?"

"I quote 'I'm sorry Frankie, but clearly you and your ex-boyfriend aren't over each other yet.'"

"Damn, that's not right"

"Yup. It's all your fault."

"No, I mean, yeah, it is my fault, but that's not what I'm talking about. They really think I'm your ex-boyfriend?"

"Yeah. Why? Is that a bad thing?."

"Well, yeah."

"Gee, thanks asshole. Nice to know you think so highly of me."

"That's not what I mean either Mr. Sensitive."

"Than what do you mean?"

I looked up and stared at the clock, and counted down the remaining time.

Looking at Frankie, I said the first thing that came to mind. "Do you honestly think that if I was your boyfriend that I'd let you get away?" Realizing I just said what was on my mind, I grabbed my bag and got out of that classroom like a bat out of hell.

I tossed my bag over my shoulder and headed down the hallway toward my locker. Once I was there, I put in my combination and opened the door. I had no homework to take with me, so I threw my bag in my locker and slammed the door shut. I rested my head on the locker and closed my eyes. I felt someone press their chest against my back and their arms wrap under mine while their hands rested on my chest. I didn't have to turn around to know who it was. I placed my hand over hers and smiled.

"Hey Lor." I said, pulling her to the side so I could turn around and kiss her on the forehead. "You have no idea how happy I am to see you. I missed you last night."

"I missed you too baby. I tried to call you, but your cell was off."

"Yeah. My battery died. I shut it off while it charged."

"No big deal. I was just letting you know that I was staying at Chloe's for the night."

"Did you girls have fun?"

"Yeah. It was nice to hang out with her again. Thanks for letting me go."

"You don't need my permission to hang out with your friends, but you're welcome."

"So what did you do last night?"

"You mean that wasn't you that snuck in my room in the middle of the night? I need to tell Frank to stop doing that. I think he gave me a hickey." I told her while rubbing the back of my neck.

"So you and Frank had fun last night than?"

"Never a dull moment with that kid."

"Gerard!" I turn around to see Frank walking down the hallway. That dude must know when a conversation is about him about a mile away. "What the hell was that all about? Do you enjoy fucking with me?"

"Can we not talk about this right now?" Sure I may have said the wrong thing, but I didn't think he would make such a big deal about it.

"Sure. Never expected you to explain yourself anyway. Later."

What is it about Frank that makes me say the things I do? I never mean to say shit like that to him to hurt his feelings. I can't help that every guy Frank brings around is never good enough for him. To be honest, I get a little jealous seeing Frank with someone. Maybe because a part of me wishes that I were the other guy. I turn my attention back to Lorelai.

"So? Do you have any plans tonight?"

"Nope. Ephram has plans with Helena tonight, so I have the place to myself." Ephram is Lorelai's brother while Helena is his girlfriend. "Come by my place around 6. I'll make you dinner."

"Sounds like a plan. I'll see you tonight." I gave her a kiss and told her I'd call her when I was on my way over.

I decided to leave my car parked in the parking lot and walk home. I knew who was waiting for me when I got home, and I didn't want him to know I was home.
I walked up the driveway and off to the side yard. I wasn't up for confronting my dad so I decided to climb through my bedroom window and wait until I have to head over to Lorelai's house, or until he leaves. Usually I would never have to wait for long. My dad usually leaves around 4 to go to the bar all night.

I've managed on my own for 6 years now. Working part time just to make enough money to put food on the table. I keep telling myself that there has been so much bad in my life that I'm bound to come across some good eventually.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket and set the alarm to wake me up in 2 hours. I might as well try to get some sleep while I can. After the alarm was set, I put my phone back in my pocket and climbed in bed. I was so tired that I was sound asleep the moment my head hit the pillow.

-------

When I woke up, my head was throbbing and it felt like my face was on fire. I went to push myself up and realized that I wasn't in my bed anymore, but on the living room floor. I picked myself up and sat on the couch, remembering how I got there in the first place.

When I walked out of the bathroom, I didn't even notice him standing in the hallway.

"Gerard?"

I stopped, but didn't turn around to look at him.

"Yeah?"

"What's today?"

I turned around with the most confused look on my face.

"Thursday."

"That's what I thought. Why weren't you in school?"

"I was."

"Don't lie to me."

"Why would I lie? I have a game tomorrow and if I miss school, I don't play. Call the school if you don't believe me"

Bad move. Never mouth off to a drunk. Especially one who doesn't need a reason to be violent.

"Yo Gerard? What happened?"

"I fell asleep."

"I meant your face."

"Oh that? Football practice this morning. Steve and James got into a fight. I tried to break it up but got punched instead." See what I mean? Lies just come spilling out without me even having to think about it anymore.

"Where's the game at again?"

"Montclair."

"That's right."

"Why? You going?"

"Come on Ger. I've never missed a game yet. Lucy, Frank, Ray and I are all riding together."

"Cool. After the game and we'll all go to Dinners for your birthday."

"Sounds good. I'm heading back over to Lucy's for dinner. Her grandparents are coming to town. Wanna come?"

"No thanks. I have plans with Lorelai. Wait. What time is it?"

"6:00."

"Fuck. I was supposed to leave 10 minutes ago. I still have to go get my car from the school." Great. I blow her off all week, now I'm late. Terrific.

I got up off the couch and headed for my room to change.

After I got dressed, I climb back up the stairs and walked out the front door after saying bye to Mikey. I walk down the driveway and grab my cell phone to call Lorelai.

"Hello?"

"Hey Lor. I'm so sorry. I didn't get any sleep last night and decided to take a nap when I got home. I slept right through the alarm. I just woke up and I'm heading to the school right now to get my car than I'm on my way."

"No rush. Ephram and Helena aren't here yet."

"Oh. I thought you said you had the place to yourself?"

"I did, but Helena's parents are going to be home so I invited them to join us. Is that okay?"

"Yeah. No problem. It would be nice to hang out with your brother. It's been awhile since I've seen him. So. What's for dinner?"

"I noticed that you had a rough day so I made spaghetti."

"Sweet! What would I do without you?"

"Probably make Frank cook you dinner."

"True. He is a good cook."

"Speaking of Frank. How about we invite him and Matt over? They've been seeing each other for a few months now and we haven't met him yet."

"I know they have a movie to catch, but I don't know when. I could call Frank and ask."

"Okay. Tell him that I would be deeply hurt if he says no."

"Will do. I'll see you in a bit. I love you."

"Love you too. Bye."
