Chapter 5

“Seriously?” Mikey’s voice still held its normal monotone, but there was a look of amusement on his face. “So, are you two… together now?” He smirked.

I felt my cheeks heat up instantly. “Shut up, Mikey.”

He laughed. “So I’m right then.”

“Mikey we’re just friends. We’ve always just been friends.” I let it go. Mikey deserved to enjoy himself after what I’d put him through the past couple of days. I moved onto a more pressing topic on my mind. “I didn’t even expect to be friends with him again, so I don’t know how long this will last. Don’t get your hopes up. “

I had meant it in complete seriousness, but Mikey had a small smile on his face now. I frowned at him, but he seemed to be reading my mind, answering my questions before they escaped my lips. “Gee, don’t play dumb. You know Frank’s sorry and you know how he feels about you- why else would he tell me he was going home at 6:30, then stay with you in your room for 3 and a half hours? Yes, I was awake. I saw him leave. Honestly, Gee, he’s just been confused, like most of us. Like you were not too long ago…”

I nodded. I didn’t need reminding. Maybe Mikey was right, maybe Frank had changed back for good, like he’d promised. After all, he had offered to drive me to school this morning…

Mikey broke through my train of thought. “What were you two doing down there for 3 and a half hours anyway?” He paused briefly. “Actually, I don’t wanna know.”

“It wasn’t like that, Mikey.” I said sternly, heat and color returning to my cheeks, “We were just talking.”

“Whatever you say, Gee.” He snatched his coffee mug off of the kitchen table and walked out the door before I could reply, leaving me alone to finish my coffee. I shook my head, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to hold it against Mikey for long.

Frank had stayed over until 10 pm last night, as Mikey had accused, but through Mikey’s suspicions, I couldn’t feel anything but utter happiness. Frank was my friend again. I couldn’t get over what felt like a dream, barely noticing when a car horn honked outside.

Finally, it hit me. My heart jumped in my chest as I ran outside, grabbing my messenger bag and shutting the door behind me. “C’mon, Gee! I can’t wait forever!” Frankie laughed that adorable, contagious chuckle and I couldn’t help but smile back. He was standing in front of the driver’s side door of his light blue mustang, leaning all his weight on the side of the car, his arms crossed in mock annoyance.

“I’m here, aren’t I?” I challenged, pulling the passenger’s side door open and sliding in. Frankie was smiling as he climbed into the driver’s seat and started the ignition. At least he hadn’t changed his mind yet. We didn’t talk for a moment, listening to the purr of the engine as it sped down the street. But I had to ask one question I’d forgotten to ask Frank last night that had come to me moments after he’d left. I took a deep breath. “Frankie?”

“Yes?” he asked with a bit of casual surprise.

“Um, did you- did you mean all those things you said before? I mean, before we were friends again?”

Frank sighed and I regretted asking. I didn’t want to hurt him again, I just had to know if he really thought I was an asshole and a faggot before. We sat in silence for a long time. Finally, he spoke. “No. Gerard, how could you even think that? Of course I didn’t actually mean any of it. I just said it… come to think of it, I don’t know why I even said it. I guess I thought it would make me happy, having a lot of people like me, just to know what it felt like to not be teased and beaten up everyday for being who I was. I don’t know what I was thinking. It was horrible. I wanted to go back for so long, but I didn’t want to do it too quickly, otherwise I thought people might start harassing you like they harassed me before. I didn’t want anything worse to happen to you.” He looked unpleased with his own explanation.

I didn’t mention the fact that I would much rather have had his “friends” beat me up for being who I was then have my best friend betray me everyday- it wouldn’t help anything to point it out. “So, why did you talk to me yesterday then?”

“After I found out you were already getting… harassed, I didn’t think it could be much worse, I thought you needed me more than ever, that maybe this might be the chance to make up for being such an asshole before.” He sighed and turned his attention back to the road.

“Frankie?”

He didn’t respond.

“Frankie, I forgive you. And thank you.” I looked up at Frank and we made eye contact for a minute before he had to return his attention to the road.

“I don’t deserve it. But thanks.” He smiled weakly and changed the subject. “We’re almost there…”

I picked my bag up out of the floorboard and put my hand on the handle. When we arrived in the senior parking lot, Frank parked his car in his normal spot, in the middle of the parking lot and surrounded by the people I had loathed for so long for stealing him away from me. He didn’t seem to realize this might cause a problem, them seeing us walking in together. “Um, Frankie? Don’t you think some of your friends might be a little… surprised to see us walking in together?”

He looked back at me, opening his door behind him and starting to get out. “Not a problem. I told you I wouldn’t let anyone hurt you, didn’t I Gee?” He was out of the car before I could respond- tell him it wasn’t me I was worried about. I sighed and got out of the car, slinging my messenger bag over my shoulder and slouching down, trying to go unnoticed.

“Hey, Frank!” someone called to Frank from his side of the car and I ducked down further. “What’s up?”

“Nothing much. What about you, Ted? Did you see that new band at the bar earlier this weekend?” As they continued their conversation, I tried to stealthily slip away without being noticed. I’d talk to him again in English, where there weren’t as many people bent on keeping us from being friends. Unfortunately, my stealth didn’t work as planned.

“Hey, Faggot, where do you think you’re going?” I heard the voice of Austin Williams before he was pushing me into the side of his truck. Austin was, of course, quite a few inches taller than me, blocking my view of Frank completely. “Hello? Anyone there?” Austin began waving one huge hand in front of my face like I was blind.

I rolled my eyes. “Fuck off, Williams. Don’t you have better things to do than mess with me?” I said, pushing against his arm to walk towards the school.

“Ooo.” He said tauntingly, blocking my path to the school. “You’ve got quite a mouth, Way. Might want to fix that before it gets you hurt.” He said it almost like a threat, daring me to continue. I squinted my eyes at him but, for once, kept my mouth shut, continuing in my attempts to pass Austin, but only being blocked time and time again. After my third try, he pushed me up against the truck again.

“Hey. Leave him alone.”

“Would you look at that, faggot, you’ve got yourself a-“ He’d been turning his head towards the voice and now his jaw was open in shock as he saw Frank standing next to him, a serious look on his face. He moved his hand off my shoulder, but didn’t move aside to let me pass. Instead, he turned on Frank. “You’re with this guy Iero?” He still sounded more disbelieving than angry.

“Yeah. You got a problem with that, Williams?” Frank still kept his face straight and serious. Before Austin answered, Frank had pushed him aside and we were both walking at a quick pace towards the main building before anyone else could intervene.
