Belated Project 39 ficlet posting

Jan 02, 2010 12:24

It turns out that apparently, I never posted three of my four Project Thirty-Nine stories to my lj. Project Thirty-Nine was a lovely combination of several writers and artists displaying their love for Sanzo/Goku. I was privileged to be part of it.

My first story of the four, A New Responsibility is here.

So here's the second of the four.

Title: Daisy Chain
Author: despina_moon
Warnings: worksafe
Pairing: Sanzo/Goku
Summary: Goku damages Sanzo's calm.
Notes: Written for Project Thirty-Nine. Many thanks to Moshesque for the beta.

Daisy Chain

His thumbnail dragged against the narrow green stalk and created a small slit. He picked up another flower and gently, he threaded its stem through the previously created hole. A fresh scent of crushed vegetation wafted in the air and he knew his fingers were already stained green from his work. He didn't care. Concentrating, he picked up the next daisy from a pile in front of him and then began the whole procedure again.

Sanzo sat lotus style with his eyes closed while he meditated. That is, while he tried to meditate. His mind was under assault. Visions of a nameless, dark-haired young man with golden eyes kept creeping into his calm. He tried persistently to clear his head and to concentrate on the void, but there was ceaseless, nagging interruption.

A steady stream of chaos trickled into his barricaded mind and that could only mean one thing. Goku. Although, he was a bit surprised at the fever pitch of oxymoronically emotions and he could only categorized what he felt as peaceful hysteria. What was that irritating monkey up to now? Sliding off the flat rock, Sanzo dusted off his robes and went in search of Goku.

Back at their camp, Hakkai was uncharacteristically lounging about, his body stretched out on a blanket with his head propped up on a pack while reading a book. Gojyo was sleeping near Hakkai, practically curled around the healer. The pathetic kappa was needy of human contact even in his sleep and luckily for him, Hakkai didn't seem to mind.

"Where's Goku?"

Hakkai continued to read for a moment before he glanced up from his book. Tipping his head to one side Hakkai answered, "I last saw him in that big meadow just through those trees over there. He was picking flowers."

"Flowers?" Sanzo frowned.

Gojyo sighed contentedly in his sleep and rolled to his side, he threw an arm over Hakkai's lap and snuggled in close. Hakkai gazed at his friend with an affectionate smile. Shifting his eyes toward Sanzo, Hakkai nodded. "Yes, flowers. Maybe you'd benefit from picking flowers, too."

"Ch." Sanzo's disgust with the two got the best of him and he stomped toward the meadow. His agitation was growing and he couldn't figure out why, he felt... sad. Was it Goku? Thoughts of the dark-haired boy meandered through his mind again and he forcibly pushed them away.

Working his way through the trees he spotted Goku and paused, taking a surreptitious study of his companion. Goku sat in the middle of a meadow just as Hakkai said. Sunlight glinted off his coronet and his shiny brown hair. At age twenty, Goku had finished growing - not that he had ever really been gangly and clumsy - but now, as a man, Goku was perfect in every proportion. Sanzo felt his heartbeat increase and his temperature rise when he licked his lips and admitted secretly to himself that Goku was a magnificent sight.

Collecting himself, Sanzo strode forward again, closing the difference between them. He stopped abruptly and only steps away when he realized what Goku was doing. The idiot was making the most intricate daisy chain Sanzo had ever seen but that wasn't really the issue. The problem was that Goku was making an intricate daisy chain while sobbing his eyes out.

Sanzo didn't like this kind of stuff, messy emotional scenes were more Hakkai's strength. Even so, he understood what Goku suffered from was an old pain, and its healing somehow belonged to Sanzo. Just as Hakkai took on Gojyo's neediness, Sanzo would embrace and endure Goku's forgotten past.

Sanzo had never seen Goku make a daisy chain before and fleetingly, he wondered where his companion had learned how to do it. He felt a surge of idiotic jealousy and shifted uncomfortably in his stance. Sanzo toed gently at the pile of flowers. "Can you show me how to do this?"

Goku gazed up at him, his golden eyes overflowing with tears. He nodded. "Yeah, but I don't know why making them makes me so sad."

Folding himself down to the ground Sanzo picked up a daisy. "Then maybe you shouldn't do it."

"What?" Goku sniffed.

"If it makes you sad, why are you doing it?"

Goku blinked, his tears slowing. "I dunno. It just seemed really important that I do it, like it's supposed to mean something."

"Then show me how to do it."

"Ya really mean it?"

Sanzo rolled his eyes. "Why else would I ask?"

"Okay." Grabbing up a flower, Goku rubbed at his tears. "First, ya take your fingernail and make a hole in the stem."

As Goku instructed him, little by little the unsettling chaotic roar in Sanzo's head quieted and became the normal dull babble. He could feel the importance of the stupid daisy chain and the dead-end confusion attached to Goku's emotional outburst. In strange and comforting silence, they made several of the flowered necklaces as the shadows lengthened and the day waned.

Finally, Goku tired of his task and leaned back. "I'm hungry."

Sanzo reached for a cigarette and lit it. "Are you done, then?"

Goku nodded, stood up and stretched.

Sanzo also stood up still hanging onto their necklaces. "Here." He handed one to Goku. "Put it on."

"Huh?"

Sanzo slipped one over his head. "We made them. We should wear them."

Goku grinned and placed the flowers around his neck. "You think Hakkai and Gojyo will wear one, too?"

"Oh, I'm certain they will." Sanzo mentally patted his gun.

"Cool! Let's go give 'em out." Goku ran a few steps and then stopped abruptly. He turned, ran back and placed a wet sloppy kiss in the vicinity of Sanzo's mouth.

"What the fuck?" Sanzo wiped away the slobber.

"Thanks." Goku grinned at him and then whirled away again. "Come on!"

Sanzo grumbled under his breath about idiot monkeys and fought to keep the smile off his face.
