Well, Murphy had promised his brother that he would get out more. Place was weird, no shit, but Conn had said there were friendly people about, and Murph was nothing if not sociable with friendly people. And hey, even the non-friendly sort were interesting, if they could throw a decent punch

Jayne was wandering around the place, aimlessly exploring and cutting an apple into pieces at the same time. Surprisingly, he was able to work this combination without any bloodshed.

He nodded to the guy on the couch. "Ni hao," he said affably.

"Ni hao," Murphy replied back, flashing him a grin. "And I hope ye speak English, because I haven't gotten much farther then that yet."

"Not bad," Jayne said, impressed despite himself. "I ain't seen too many people here that didn't come from our 'verse speaking Mandarin."

"Well, it's a pretty damn interestin' language te learn, that's fer sure. I'm Murphy." He grinned again and held out his hand after securing his cigarette in his mouth. "Where're ye from?"

Jayne shook Murphy's hand firmly. "Serenity," he answered. "You from Earth-That-Was, I'm guessing?"

"Huh? Never heard of the place and- Earth-That-Was?"

[theman_jayne]

"She's a boat," Jayne explained. "Yeah, Earth-That-Was. Where I'm from, Earth ain't around no more. She got all used-up or some shit. I don't know, I ain't no good at history, but that's what the Preacher says."

" -- right." Murphy attempted not to stare in confusion, and rather failed.

Jayne frowned. "You ain't never heard of spaceships?"

"I've 'eard of spaceships alright, I'm just not so sure about the other bits."

[theman_jayne]

"'s all true," Jayne said.

"-- I didn't catch yer name, by the way."

[theman_jayne]

"Jayne Cobb."

[aequitassanctus]

"Jayne. Alright, then. Want a beer?" Perhaps giving the (possibly) crazy man alcohol was not a good idea, but it made a good change of subject.

"I ain't going to say no," Jayne beamed.

Murphy gave him a smile and quickly went to get another bottle for him.
