Mary has just been through perhaps the hardest day of her life. The man she has followed and learned from and loved has just been violently put to death. She doesn't know what to do or where to go

He looks up, seems to try to count the days. "Must have been months and months," he concludes aloud his deliberation. "This place kind of feels like it's always the same thing, day after day. I'm Johnny, by the way."
He eyes her - she's pretty, and friendly. He's not above appreciating both.
She nods politely then breaks into a smile again. She's quite accustomed to being appreciated by men, since she's a prostitute (but a pious one!). "A pleasure, Johnny. Seems you have been here for quite a while. Is there anything fun to do on this boat?"
Johnny eyes Mary, a moment. Basically, he’s trying to determine if this is another junky that he might have to deal with - as it is, he’s an interesting fellow, Johnny. While he may be a terrorist, and completely non-religious (mostly because in something close to 3000AD Metropolis, there isn’t much religion left to believe in), he has a soft side and strict morals that involve keeping one’s brain narcotics free and dying .
“Depends what you call fun, sugar,” he replies, half-lasciviously, half-amused. “No ‘shrooms and barely ever any parties. Mostly, this is a boat, and people live on it. Basically, I’ve been playing cards and eating lots. Getting drunk occasionally, or just listening to that crazy girl on the piano - she’s not bad, when she doesn’t know you’re listening.”
Crazy girl would be Nat Goodman - aka, Johnny’s only long-term friend, though Adakias has been quite sweet too.
While Mary's definitely more of an "anything goes" kind of girl, she's spent very little time experimenting with drugs. She's seen enough patrons -- and friends -- get messed up on stuff to know better. She has it in her mind that she wants to be a respectable whore -- as respectable as one can be, I suppose. She's not exactly proud of her job, but she can appreciate the comfort and pleasure she is able to give to others, as well as the modest living it provides her.
She fixes Johnny with a coy grin at being called sugar. "So basically just hanging out, then? Sounds like my kind of place." She sinks to the deck and sits cross-legged, carefully tucking her skirt into place. She leans back against the railing and looks up at him with a relaxed sort of smile.
Well, that’s new. Johnny’s eyebrows shoot up, and he looks down at Mary with a look that spells out, `You, woman, are completely mad. Her eyes aren’t blood shot, she looks healthy, and she doesn’t seem to have any traces of injection, though if she’d popped a pill, there wouldn’t be any.
“You know, this is a fancy shmancy kinda place, doll. They have chairs here, with all of them assorted lil cushions and stuff. You don’t have to rough it. Here, let me show you.” And because Johnny is feeling magnanimous today, he extends his hand to help her up. “You even get a room with cable, so no need to go all hobo on me. We’re past sleeping under bridges.”
Which he’s done, for quite a bit - he was a street kid for a bit, until he found the Underground café.
She giggles and takes his hand, allowing him to help pull her to her feet. She stands gracefully. "Thank you." She's done her own share of sleeping and living in rough accomodations. "That all sounds so nice. Probably nicer than what I'm used to." She pauses as she recalls an unfamiliar word Johnny has just used. "What's a cable?" she asks, completely serious.
“Yeah, I ate myself sick when I arrived,” he mutters, until the question registers. “Wait, you don’t know about cable?” A beat, and the returning question comes forth. “I know it sounds kind of nuts, but when are you from, again?”
He’s used to this place being slightly retarded technologically, but he’s never met anyone who didn’t know about electricity - though he did have to explain beer, once. It was fun.
She blushes a little. "When am I from? I-- don't think I understand..." Now that she thinks about it, he is dressed differently than she's used to seeing, but she had just assumed that Johnny was from a faraway land.
JCS is such a strange musical, in that the characters use relatively modern language and there are some random anachronisms thrown in throughout the show, yet it's still set in traditional biblical times. So I'm just going to play Mary as if she's unfamiliar with electricity or any technology. I think it'll be easier that way. XD
"Ah, it happens, that way," Johnny says with a sigh. He pinches the bridge of his nose, and tries to explain. "Here. I'm from a place called Metropolis. It's -- probably in your very distant future. There are people here from 1980's AD, and others from the French Revolution, and -- yeah, so, that's that. Let me start with another question. Where are you from?"
Mary blinks several times, and her mouth opens as if to say, "Ohhhhhh..." as understanding washes over her. "I see. I mean, I think I do. So you're from the future? Wow." She grins in amazement. "I'm not really sure what time I am from, then, but I can tell you I have lived in many towns. I traveled a lot," she says with shrug. "Never really stayed in one place for very long, especially while following-- well, following my teacher. Before I came here, I was near Jerusalem. Have you heard of it?"
XDD Thank you. I have a habit of playing cutesy, fluffy-type characters (when I'm not playing Death Eaters, you know XD) and I didn't really expect Mary to turn out to be that way. But I'm liking her so far. Adorable is fun to play! XD
Johnny double takes, and nods. "Yeah, I heard the name. City of God, the Wailing Wall, the Golgotha, all that. It's hard not to have heard the name. I'm not much of an erudite, but that's one place I've heard of." He didn't let go of her hand, and is quite fine with the situation, so he's going to pretend that he didn't realize he was doing that.
"So where else have you been? You're a student, right?"
He's supposing that she might be one -she's young, after all, and too sweet to be a wench, even if her clothes... yeah. Let's not think about how nicely they fit her.
XDDD I... try to keep a reasonably diversified roster (ranging from ingenues to... Morgoth, erhem). Adorable is indeed a lot of fun. So is evil. >:D
He's out, leaning nonchalantly by the railing, and having a cigarette. He hasn't noticed the new arrival, just yet.

"Hey there." His voice is quiet, a bit rough, but he's not agressive, even if he isn't smiling.
Johnny just isn't much of a smiling type, except when Natalie makes him laugh, on miraculously momentous occasions.
