... we're okay?

Well.

Steve had been fresh from a meeting and was taking his three year old yellow lab, Dodger, for a walk. He had just gotten off the phone with Joanne and stuck his cellphone back in his pocket, juggling the dog leash from one hand to the other as he did so ( Read more... )

Gordon had taken to walking around outside lately. The fresh air calms his stomach and keeps his head from randomly aching, and it's nice to just ... Have time to himself. He gets irritable when he's not feeling his best, and the last thing he wants is to snap at someone. He was about to go a different when he heard a dog bark. Having not seen any dogs yet, he wondered if, for a moment, there's someone new and maybe he would feel up to talking to them.

Imagine his pleasant surprise when he saw the back of what was sure to belong to a familiar face. Steve didn't even get a hello before he got a hug. A relieved, somewhat exhausted, very happy best friend hug.

"What -- ?" Steve turns in the hug, then laughs and wraps his arms around Gordon, kissing his cheek. "Well hi to you, too! Sorry I had to run after the meeting, I had an appointment with a client I couldn't be late for." Gordon gets an affectionate hair ruffle, and a wide grin. "What are you doing here? What am I doing here?"

"Ngh." He takes a moment to just take in the fact that there's finally someone here he feels completely comfortable with, then pulls back a bit and puts on a grin. "I couldn't tell you. It's, um. It's messed up. Please don't ask me to explain." He laughs a bit, then bends down to give Dodger an equally affectionate hug and head scritch.

Dodger closes her eyes happily, then gives Gordon a slobbery hand kiss.

Steve, meanwhile, looks confused. "Okay -- I won't. But is there a way back to New York?"

"I, um, don't think so." He happily wipes his hand off on Steve's sleeve. "But there's everything you need here. Rooms, free food, clothes, meds --" Gordon shrugs. "Mark and company are here."

"Thanks for that, jackass," he says, affectionately.

... and then the worry sets in. "But -- what about my clients? I have people depending on me back in New York!"

"No problem." Gordon laughs again, then sighs when Steve starts in with the what about. He hates this part with new people, even Steve, because, well, it's hard to forget these things himself. He doesn't need to be reminded. "I don't know, Steve. It's not -- I don't know. Don't start that panic thing you do. You'll make my head hurt."

"I don't do a panic thing. I never panic. I'm always -- calm and cool. And collected. And I have a meeting first thing in the morning, Gordon! What am I supposed to do about that?" He paces a little, looking fretful.

Another sigh. He sits down and runs a hand down his face before clenching his eyes momentarily. There's really nothing he can do but let Steve get over his calm and collected coolness by himself.

"I don't know, Steve."

"I'm sorry -- I'm sorry. You know me. I get -- worked up. Forgive me." Steve sighs and rubs the back of his neck. "So I'm here. What do I do now?"

"Find a room, I guess?" He shrugs and gets up, giving Steve a smile that says there's not need to apologize, he understands. "There might a free one near mine."

"I'll do that. Can't be far from my best friend, of course." He tugs lightly at Gordon's hair, then pulls him into another hug. Just because.

A soft noise issues from Gordon's throat at the hair tug, and he gladly hugs back.

"I'm glad you're here."

"How long have you been here, then?" Because as far as Steve was concerned, he'd just seen Gordon a few hours ago.

Gordon shrugs, still hugging.

"I dunno. Around seven months?" He has a feeling that's gonna get some sort of vocal protest from Steve, so he puts a hand over Steve's mouth to shut him up. "I know, I know. It sounds ... Well, insane. But. Trust me. You'll understand the longer you stay here."
