The man in the nice, well-tailored business suit with a large briefcase who has just come onboard doesn't even bother with the usual preliminaries of "where am I?", "how did I get here?", or, indeed, "hello". He's too busy talking on his cell phone to notice that he's onboard a cruise ship, apparently

Olive wishes she had one to give him, but hers isn't working either. "It's still not working?" she asks quietly.

"No," her father grumbles, shaking the phone a little, as if it'll do anything at all. "I got it making outgoing calls, at least, for a little while, just long enough to find out what a shambles the office is in - Sanders really is pretty useless. Not long enough to do anything about it."

"I ... I bet they miss you..." After all, they know what it's like to have him all the time.

"I doubt that very much," he answers dryly. "Without me supervising, they can all slack off to their hearts' content. No, they're probably pretty happy I'm gone."

She tugs nervously on her fingers. "Well, I-- I'm... glad you're here..." there's an edge of hopefulness in her voice, though who knows what she's hoping for, exactly.
