*All dark-suited and frowning, because he doesn't know where he is and that's not right and wasn't he just dead anyway and what the Hell is going on and what happened to France and why is there suddenly a boat?*

I..er...what?!

Ah, a question with so many levels. I could on for hours on the topic, but I think your question is rather "Where am I and why am I here?" Oui? Well, to put it as plainly as possible... I haven't the slightest clue. Well, I have ideas, of course, but not a scrap of proof for any of them at all, and really, what good are theories without evidence?

All about the context, mon ami. *slightly befuddled* If you don't know, what hope is there for the rest of us? I thought death would be slightly different. Give me a theory to cling to?

Erm, very well then. The theory that holds the most water.....so to speak... is the afterlife theory. Of course there are a number of mythologies that involve boats, so it is not entirely surprising and unusual, but the most prominent of these is the Egyptian mythology. So it could well be we're on our way to see the pharaohs.

*considers this for a long few moments*

...well, I've never been to Egypt *smile*.

*grins* Neither have I. Of course, this will be the Egypt of the gods and the dead rather than the Egypt of the living, but I imagine that will make it even more splendid. And really, how many people get this opportunity? *rubs nose* Actually... if this means that they were right about the afterlife... A fair few. Of course, none live to tell about it...

We'll be in good company, then at least, mon ami. Though it does seem to me that the good Egyptians might not have imagined a boat such as this one *pats a railing*. We shall see, and in the meantime, well... I cannot think of anything pressing to do, can you?

That we will, mon ami! And indeed, I can think of no better. And as for the manner of boat, the Egyptians always were an extraordinarily innovative race. I imagine they've moved on somewhat since the golden age of pyramids and pharaohs. It is quite an impressive piece of naval architecture, I say, even if not as gilded as one would expect from something Egyptian. But then, all people's tastes change.

*in a mournful tone, though his eyes suggest there's nothing terrible about the chore* I have so much reading to do. All this salt air has me terribly concerned for my books, so I feel it is my duty to read them all in case they don't survive the journey.

*amused face* My goodness. M'sieur Combeferre, however will you cope with such an arduous task? *pats his arm* My deepest sympathies go with you, knowing your aversion to reading as I do. *chuckles*

*grins* It is of course my duty to persevere, no matter how distasteful the task. And if it brings about my demise... Well, I suppose there's no danger of that!

And what of you, cher Feuilly? Have you some pressing chore to eat away at your time on board this lovely ship?

The short answer would be no. The longer answer would be no, mon ami, I have not. I would hope that I will find something useful to do before long - I dread to think that I would ever be idle, even in any afterlife.

Oh dear. Well, we'll have to do something about that. You know, I had an aunt once who found herself in a similar situation, and so she took up knitting... No, I suppose that may not quite be suitable...

*blinks* I hope that I don't resemble your aunt to such degree, mon ami, though I am sure she is a wonderful woman. Who knows, perhaps I will find myself some small studio room to keep me occupied. It is a large vessel.

No, mon ami, you do not. For one thing, you are somewhat... smaller than she. A wonderful woman, of course, but she seemed convince that consumption of pastries was the best way to show her patriotism, and it was a cause she committed herself to whole-heartedly.

I'm certain there will be something suitable. I haven't explored much, I'm afraid, but I have come across a number of vacant rooms when searching for my own.

I believe I have found myself my first task! Well done, see, you have helped me already immensely.

*blinks* You have? ...What is it?

Why 'Ferre - an exploration of rooms, of course. *grin* Not, I grant you, a most enthralling task, although that of course depends on what I might find.
