It may be a little sooner than [he] anticipated or expected, but he had promised Julia. And when it came down to it, he didn't want to keep Lydia from her parents. Or parent, as the case may be. From a mother who did love her and would care for her as a child ought to be loved and cared for.
His opinions on Lydia's father had already been well expressed and were best left out of things as far as when the child was around.
Jess had apparently taken to the girl, at least. And that was all to the good, to his mind; his daughter could use a playmate her own age.
He listened to Lydia tell him about her day out with Fallon as they walked, carefully steering her around the worst of the wreckage of the mansion, keeping it from her view and explaning the scorching and crumbling as someone getting a little too enthusiastic with the fireworks. Which it probably had been. He hoped. At any rate, Fallon and both the girls and all of the ladies were safe. And that was what mattered.
