For hours, a white seabird circles above the mansion, waiting. Only when darkness falls and nothing in particular happens, she glides down, and enters the mansion through an open window, perching on the edge of a chair -- and then, suddenly, the air around her shimmers, her shape changes, and a woman sits in her place. Her shoulders are slumpled, her hair is tousled, her white dress in disarray, and although her eyes are almost unnaturally bright, she looks very tired.
"Greetings. I am Elwing, daughter of Dior son of Lúthien. I came in search of my husband, Eärendil the Mariner. He must be here."
