Introduction; a secluded room in the mansion

Aug 27, 2006 15:55

At the end of a hallway where no one usually goes, there's a spartan room. Inside lives a woman, flanked by anonymous nurses that stick with her as obediently as lapdogs. She wears old-fashioned, expensive clothing, including a black mourning veil draped over her face, and her hands, withered and ancient, lay on top of an embroidery sampler in ( Read more... )

"Hi, ma'am." And in something left over from his knighting rather than gardening days, he bows politely. "I don't need anything. Anything I can get you, though?"

"Nothing," says Great-Aunt Cornelia. "I'm quite comfortable. Tell me, please, who I have the honor of hosting."

"I'm Percival," he says, guessing she might be the kind of lady who'd want full names and not nicknames. "It's nice to meet you, ma'am."

He's right, as well. "Percival whom?"

"Um, Sir Percival of Camelot."

Cornelia immediately assumes that she is dealing with a madman. There are no shortage of those in her family, and she is used to them, even if she is unaware she is mad herself. She looks at him carefully. "Are you." Her voice is measured. "Then it is my honor indeed to have you here."

Percy fluffs his hair sheepishly. "Sorry. I'm really only Percival properly. I'm not really a knight any more. I--I left. To mind my sister and my friend."

That's unusual, even for a madman. "What happened?"

"Um, well." He pauses. "Well, see, my sister--died. My friend did too. And I kind of messed up my quest really bad, so I decided to stop trying to do that, since I--well, I wasn't good enough, see, 'cause you could only do it if you were really good, and I wasn't, so I messed up, and I thought I'd--well. Thought Heli and Galahad were more important that trying to do something I just wasn't any good at. So I made myself a little house and a big garden and buried them by the house, and I took care of them." Then he lets his breath out slowly, sadly.

"I see. I'm very sorry." Again, her tone is careful. "What was your quest?"

"It's okay. I looked after them pretty good." He smiles at her, better this time. "I was helping Galahad out on the Grail Quest. Didn't do so good, though."

"Again, my sympathy." She sighs, suddenly weary.

"It's okay," again. "Things got better. Are you okay?"

"Fine, if somewhat limited." She gives her surroundings a quick, bitter glance-over. "When one reaches my age, one gains the privilege of regretting the present and wishing for the past."

"Things aren't so good?" he asks sympathetically. It's worth noting that he's a good listener. He's not clever and he's not wise, but he's a sweet country boy who'll listen and try to help out if he can.

"I find the north doesn't agree with me," she says; at least there's no harm in him that she can see. "I much prefered my former home; but at least I have my children here to comfort me." She smiles, having completely forgotten (today, at least) that the children she loves so dearly are dead.
