There is a shadow, a great pale shape against the sun. Its form is the sleek, gracefully curving form of a shark, moving like a ripple of light through the water.

Here he is, a huge creature, larger than any other, older than any memory save his own and the Sea’s. A truly terrible beauty, all grace and speed and size and teeth. He looms, not so much because he is intent on intimidation (he is, generally, more of an ambush hunter and has no need of such tactics) but more because a being the size of a house cannot help but loom.

“Good day,” he says, in a voice as inescapable as dawn, as solid as the bones of the world. He turns, slow and smooth, the start of a easy, thoughtful circle. “I trust you are all well?” There is laughter in that question, horrible laughter, dry and hard and cold.
