Sibyl Vane

*timidly* Hello?

I am Sibyl Vane... I am new here, as you can see, and... and this, I suppose, is my introductory letter.

Well, what is there to say about myself? I am Sibyl Vane, as I said. I'm seventeen years old, and an actress in London, where I live with my mother.

And I heard that my Prince Charming was here...

Oh, I remember you! We haven't met, of course, but I did see you perform once. Dorian wanted so much for Basil and I to come and see you as Juliet. As I recall it was dreadful, but you had a certain sort of charm anyhow-- or at least you were very beautiful, which is nearly the same thing.

Welcome to the community, Miss Vane. I daresay you'll find life interesting here.

*timid look* Oh, dear, I was rather awful that night, wasn't I... Dorian was rather upset with me. *bites her lip* Very upset, actually.

Thank you, sir. I imagine I shall.

*pleasantly* Yes, he was rather unhappy about the whole thing. But you mustn't make yourself upset over it, Miss Vane. I think you dealt with the situation admirably, in the end. And I think bad actresses are far more interesting than good ones-- not when performing, of course, but when they are offstage. They always have stories to tell.

Admirably? I... I killed myself, sir. That is hardly admirable. And I am a good actress. I was, at least. And I could be again.

I would think that it was rather better than spending the rest of your life playing the part of a scorned woman, Miss Vane. But do tell me if you decide to perform again-- I should like to see you in good form, some day. I am sure you must have been good, when Dorian first met you. I have never known him to be mistaken in these matters.
