The truth is, Davos is scared.

He is a simple man in many ways but he likes to think he is a sensible one and there are somethings that no simple man should ever meddle with. He has rose too high, that is the truth. Rose too high and made enemies out of those who resent it.

This is their work, he thinks, it has to be. Her work or that of her god. ( Read more... )

Robb Stark is spending an inordinate amount of time thinking these days, and hence is outside. Grey Wind rises from his place at Robb's feet and pads a few steps forward, baring his teeth. Robb stands as well, eyes narrowed and hand warily to his sword.

"Who are you?" He challenges, not recognizing, but Grey Wind seems wary, and not trusting his wolf's instincts in the past has proved to be a bad idea.

Typist: Welcome!

Davos didn't answer the question as the sight of a large wolf along side a man who was clearly a warrior, had caused his throat to tighten and he took a small step back instead.

"Lord Stark?" he asked hesitantly, more of a question than a greeting and he very deliberately didn't reach for his sword. He had never met the Young Wolf but he heard of the boy King and his wolf companion and if it was indeed them than he could not hope to beat them in a fight.

Of course, the main problem with that theory was that Robb Stark was supposed to be dead.

At least he's not Jaime. Just about anyone is an improvement over that one. (We said just about. Don't tempt fate please.) Robb narrows his eyes but says, sharply, "Grey Wind, to me," and the direwolf obeys.

He nods once, briefly. "And you are?" He notes the weapon, trying to figure out allegiances of this man, though the lack of immediate motion to attack is a relief.

"Davos, my lord," Davos replied with all the courtesy he could manage, relieved that the wolf had been called back. "They call me the Onion Knight."

He was not at all sure why he was facing a man who was supposed to be dead but he knew it was not good news. He had never met the Starks in battle but Stannis was no friend of theirs and they were sure to know it.

It takes Robb a moment to remember where he's heard the name before, as fixated as he's been on Lannisters and Freys these days, but then he does and frowns slightly, but only slightly. "Stannis's man."

He considers that, distinctly warily, though Grey Wind, judging by the rumble in his throat, has already made his judgment. "Where were you?"

Davos wasn't entirely sure whether he should answer that but he supposed it was no great secret and he wasn't about to offend Robb needlessly.

"Eastwatch, my lord," he replied slowly.

Robb is examining Davos thoughtfully, seeming to be debating something inwardly. "You're not there anymore," he says, eventually. "What were you up to, then?" Since Stannis has been unnervingly quiet. A good thing, perhaps. Or a dangerous thing.

Davos is trying very hard not to give anything away in his expression but he's not at all comfortable with being interrogated by a dead king outside a stronghold he does not know. There is nothing here that he understands.

"The Watch asked for our help," he replies slowly, glad to have solid facts to fall back upon. "A king protects his people."

He expects Robb will get around to telling him where he is and what is going to happen to him in due time and so isn't going to ask just yet.

Thank you for the welcome, btw. I kept forgetting to say anything but I appreciated it.

Grey Wind stands up and shakes, taking a few steps toward Davos with a couple sniffs. Robb shoots him a look but says nothing for the moment, and goes back to focusing on Davos himself.

Oddly, though, he relaxes a bit. "What happened with the Watch?" After all, he does have a half brother there. And Jon seemed pretty worried when he arrived here, which doesn't say much of anything good.

Davos steps back when the wolf steps forward. He's really quite intimidated by it.

"His Grace took the Wildings by surprise," he replies. "Their armies were broken. The Wall still holds."

Grey Wind bares his teeth silently, almost amused by Davos' fear, keeping him on his toes. Grey Wind trusts few people these days. He breathes out, a touch relieved. "Good." A pause, and he considers Davos. "And Jon Snow is Lord Commander, is that right?"

Hungry for news, Robb is, a little bit.

"He is," Davos confirms.

"I'd not heard that you survived your Uncle's wedding, my lord," he adds after a little pause. Mayhap Robb had reasons to fake his own death but Davos thinks not. He has seen too many queer things to rule out that he is talking to a dead man's shade, as uneasy as the thought leaves him.

Robb's expression flattens a bit, with a touch of cold anger. "I didn't," briefly, right hand working once. "Whatever you heard is likely correct."

Thinking about his own death used to make Robb uneasy too. Mostly, now, it makes him angry.

He thought as much so he just nods once.

"It was ill done," he says and for a moment he could hear leaches burning in his King's chamber's. "Those Freys are cursed."

"I certainly hope so," a little savagely. He takes a deep breath to calm himself, though. "As to this place..."

Davos waits for him to continue. He has no desire to interrupt Robb when he's about to tell him what he really wants to know.
