~Boy problems

Martha is sitting somewhere, at a table, her notebook open to a blank page, her pencil poised to write or draw something. She wants to perhaps sketch that tree outside, even if she isn't very good at it. She tries scrawling out a leaf, but sighs, clearly distracted by something else ( Read more... )

Moritz smiles a little and touches her shoulder lightly. "Hello, Martha. How are you doing?"

"More or less alright. I spent a lot of time outside today -- the weather's getting so nice." And he is, actually, in a fairly decent mood. For once.

"Isn't it lovely?" she agrees, smiling, glad to see him looking happy. "I should be going outside more often."

"I could show you the fort sometime, if you'd like." Though he immediately regrets saying such a silly thing, because it sounds like -- a date invitation, almost. And he remembers what Ilse said, about perhaps Martha being fond of him, and he feels awful that he's perhaps inadvertently leading her on. How complicated this is all getting.

Well, German children and complications seem to go hand in hand nowadays. "Is it a secret fort?" Martha asks shyly, tugging on a braid. "If it's secret, then I would hate to intrude!"

"Well -- Melchior and I built it, and Ilse and I painted it. She and I go there often... but it's not terribly secret, I don't think?" He feels -- a little strange, taking Martha to a place where he and Ilse go so often. But he wants to make Martha happy, since she was one of the few who was kind to him, especially at his funeral. And he feels horrible about what happened to her at home -- she deserves a good friend here.

Well, she can't help but feel a little giddy inside and she promptly smiles at him, a small but joyful smile. "W-well," Martha begins, clearing her throat, "if no one minds, then I think I would like to go see it some time!"

"Whenever. It's not as though we have school here. Our days are free to do with as we please. It's... very nice, actually."

"...Can we go now?" she asks, ready for a distraction-- well, a sort of distraction.

"Er -- yes. I don't see why not." He shrugs, and smiles and nods, offering his hand to her. "Shall we?"

She pauses before taking his hand and standing up. "We shall," she replies with a soft giggle.

And so Moritz leads Martha to the fort, not really saying much along the way. He was never very good with small talk. Once there, he gestures at the fort rather proudly, "This is it! Melchior and I put it together ourselves. It's -- not the best looking fort, but it's sturdy. Or has been, so far."

She looks up and down, her eyes wide with wonder. "Oh! Oh, how remarkable! You three did this all by yourselves?" she asks, thinking it best to release his hand before she feels any more awkward.

"It was a team effort, yes." He smiles, remembering how fun it was to build and paint -- and then blushes faintly when he remembers what happened during the building and the painting.

She watches him and can't help but feel a trifle jealous of all the moments she's missed while everyone was here and she was still in their world. "That's very nice," she says quietly, biting her lips.
