Clarion, by and large, has avoided crackplots throughout his DF career, but it had to catch up with him sooner or later. A startled "I say--" issues from a nearby sitting room, followed by a bewildered "Oh dear", and anyone who looks in will find a strapping six-foot young man in workman's clothes, sprawled in a chair with his face in his hands, chuckling.

He lifts his head. "That was more or less what I said myself," in Clarion's genial, slightly affected tones, with a rueful smile. "I was thinking that I hadn't seen him in some time, but I hardly expected to do so in the mirror."

"Oh, it's you!" She pounces. "I didn't think it could be him."

He laughs. "I suppose it could be, but evidently it isn't. Whatever happened, you seem to have escaped it-- or have you?"

"I don't know! Maybe I'm not."

"In that case, I'd better inquire your name, to be certain." His eyes twinkle.

"Well, I don't have the first idea, I've got so many names. I just forget them all over the place."

More laughter. "I suppose you have, haven't you? Perhaps you should give some of them to charity."

[queen_oracle]

"Oh, but who'd want a name like Augusta?"

[oneclearcall]

"Beggars can't be choosers," with an even brighter twinkle.

[queen_oracle]

That gets a bright, clear, appreciative laugh. "Oh! You're extremely right."

Clarion's smile is rather more dazzling than he intends it to be. "Be sure to remember it. It's an uncommon occurrence."

[queen_oracle]

"I promise. I'll recite it like a catechism in the mornings."

[oneclearcall]

"Then that's all right. How are you, by the way?"

"Oh, I'm lovely. We just got back from Italy."
