Edward is Concerned. He's not seen Bella since she arrived, which means (in his mind) she's lying dead somewhere that he somehow hasn't looked yet. He's searched the grounds dozens of times, but hasn't seen her. It's times like these he wishes he could hear her thoughts the most. The thought, of course, had crossed his mind that perhaps she didn't

Jaenelle comes in from the kitchen and winces slightly at the noise, but tilts her head at the distress. "Excuse me," she inquires in a soft voice. "Sir, is something wrong?"

Even if his ears weren't more sensitive than normal human ears, he likely would have heard her thoughts anyway. He stops and looks apologetic, "Forgive me, I'm being entirely too loud, aren't I?"

She gives him a small smile. "A bit, but it's all right. I'm used to rather a lot of noise."

"No -- forgive me, it was rude. I don't always realize how... forcefully I play." He gives her a polite half-bow from his seat at the piano bench. "I'm not sure we've met before, ma'am."

She laughs a little, then makes a peculiar face. "Ma'am. Hmm. I must be looking old or something. Second time in a few days." She gives him a quick grin. "I'm Jaenelle, and no, I haven't met you before."

"Not old at all, I was just being polite." He smiles back, deciding Jaenelle seems very nice. "I'm Edward Cullen, it's a pleasure to meet you."

"A pleasure to meet you as well, Mr. Cullen," she teases. "I suppose I'm just not used to polite males," she adds, wryly.

"I make an effort to be as polite as possible, usually. Unless the situation calls for a different course of action, of course."

The smile fades slightly. "There are occasions."

"Unfortunately, there are times when one must be cruel. But I prefer not to be." Sarcastic and biting yes, but not cruel.

Her mouth tightens slightly, her eyes taking on a cast of sapphire. "Cruelty is never necessary. Only justice, and vengeance."

"Of course -- I didn't mean unprovoked cruelty. Only in justice or vengeance."

She gives a tense nod and then the moment passes and she gives him a smile again. "I'm sorry. We were talking about something, weren't we?"
