Ernst pokes his head in the door, holding two carefully wrapped packages in his arms (one quite a bit bigger than the other).
"Wendla -- hello? Ohandthelittleone! Oh my she's so small. I heard the news -- I've gifts for you both. Belated Christmas presents, of a sort. But if you're too tired I can come back...?"
"But I wanted to!" He moves quietly to the edge of the bed and gives her a peck on the cheek. "The larger one is for you, the smaller one is for the baby. Oh -- should I open them for you, or do you want to wait..."
Ernst giggles and carefully starts opening the gifts -- the smaller one is first, and contains a little pink hat, for Brigitta. "I'm not sure if it will fit, it might be too big, but perhaps she can grow into it?"
Wendla gasps and beams at Ernst. "It's so.... sweet! I love it!" She rocked Brigitta a little and cooed down at her, "Look, Briggita! Look what Ernst brought you! Isn't it lovely?"
And the second package is a knitted scarf in light blue and much too long. "And this one is for you. I got a little carried away, I'm sorry -- it's quite long, but you can wrap it, perhaps...?"
Another delighted gasp from Wendla. "It's beautiful! Did you make it all yourself? -- Oh, Ernst, thank you so much! I'm sorry I don't have a present for you, but... would you like to see the baby?"
