Jonathan Strange has been neglecting his wife--burying his head in tomes on weather patterns and strange magics, letting time slowly slip past him. He has forgotten that he has made a bargain with a fairy, and that eternal darkness is the consequence for shirking it.

Now, all of the clocks in the Mansion proclaim it midnight, and the building itself is caught in a cone of darkness centered around one sleeping man.

Happy New Year, Jonathan Strange.

Typist: For the moment, everyone who lives in the Mansion can feel free to wander around in the darkness cone until someone more powerful than the gentleman chooses to lift the spell. Even if the spell has been lifted, though, it will remain persistent around Mr Strange. The gentleman has made very sure of that.
