He kneels down and scoops her up very awkwardly in one arm. He still isn't used to using it.

It's been long enough that Pyanfar has trouble distinguishing the screaming of an healthy child in emotional distress from that of a hurt child.

This explains why she's moving at a run. It also explains the pistol (well, actually, a very long and largely illegal series of events explains the pistol, but that's a more general sort of explanation).

She tucks it away promptly when she sees that, in fact, no one has a gun to anyone else's head. Also there are no copious amounts of blood and no tense stand offs. Good. "You've got a good pair of lungs, kid," she says, through a slight stitch in her side - she's getting soft again, not good. "You'd make a fine dock master."

Athena chokes, gurgles, and falls silent in sheer surprise. She looks up at Pyanfar with furrowed brows. "Lion," she says tearfully, but with some curiosity. Her lion doesn't talk.
