Skimpole has always spoken of himself as being a mere child in the ways of the world. Now he is one. A lazy looking little boy who expects to be entertained. One would have to look hard to find it but there is something of the bully in his eyes.

"Who are you?" Skimpole gives the other boy a sizing up sort of glance. "What are you doing?"

"I'm Richard Carstone. And I'm going to the kitchen. Who are you?" he asks, trying to be superior and failing - Skimpole is dressed more nicely than he is, and both boys can notice it.

"I'm Harold Skimpole." For someone who is such a childlike adult, he seems like a very grown up child. Mainly he just sounds bored.

"Oh." A bit of a pause. "Have you been here long?"

"Perhaps. Do you live here?"

"No. Sometimes."

"How can you live somewhere only sometimes?"

"So this is one of your houses, then?" He gives Richard another appraising look.

And Richard, for the second time today, lies. "It's my father's." He couldn't say why, exactly, but he wanted to make the boy stop looking so superior.

Skimpole nods. "Then I shall live here sometimes."

"If he says you can."

[skimpole]

"Of course, I can. We are friends, right?"

"Sure. But he doesn't know it yet, does he?"
