"Let me know if y'get any business," Sweet Alice says dryly. "I never do." He looks at her with something like pity. If Alice, with his glossy black curls and pretty mouth and impossible lashes can't find customers, he doubts Zara will.

"Don't matter much," she says, with a rough little shrug.

A nod. "'s true. Not like y'have to work to eat around here." He tilts his head to one side, giving her a curious look. "So why are you?"

"'Cause I been doing it without the sign half the last year anyway."

"So why not keep at it like that?"

She shrugs.

Alice looks at her, then shrugs too. It doesn't matter much, after all. "Most'f the fellows here don't go in for your sort, you know," he informs her. "Sods, the lot of 'em."

"Sure there are, but not all of those'll be the whoring type."

"D'you like it?" Alice asks suddenly. "The soldier boys don't, mostly, or say they don't, and maryannes mostly don't mind, but I never asked any of the ladybirds."

"What, whoring? I like fighting better."

He wrinkles his nose. "Fighting? What for?"
