He looks at her, a little surprised that she isn't wearing a star. "Do you know Hebrew? Or Yiddish?"

Only a little bit. Do you?

"No." He sounds a bit ashamed. "I'd like to learn."

*frowns* I don't think there are any Hebrew teachers here. Maybe Mr. Shylock... *though he wouldn't be able to teach Yiddish, because he's Italian*

"At the camp they said I was a Gentile Boy. I don't want to be. I want to at least be able to join them when they pray."

Oh, you go to camp? I've always wanted to go! *is pre-Holocaust and lives in blissful ignorance of anti-Semitism*

"They'd kill you. They don't need kids." Nevermind the fact that he can't be that much older than her. He also doesn't go in for caring about other's feelings very much any more. "They'd kill you with poison gas then burn you in the ovens with all the others."

*she's sixteen, actually, but the typist knows her best from the first book, where she's ten, and therefore fails at actually making her a teenager. ah well* W-what? Who? Why?

"The Germans. They're killing all the Jews. Don't you know?" He says it all very matter of factly.

I didn't- my sister's beau is fighting the Germans, but- are they really?
