Armand is taking a walk with baby Etienne, to give Chris a break (and maybe a chance to plan some birthday secrets). He's singing to the baby as they approach the lake, then he stops when he sees Nancy. He shifts the baby to one arm, and waves.

"Bonjour, Mlle. Drew." He looks at either her toes or her face. "Shouldn't you be wearing more clothes than that in public?"

She waves at him. "No. I don't see any reason to."

He shakes his head. "You modern people are so strange."

[originaldrew]

"I'm just tanning. I may even go for a dip later." She pauses. "Well, what did they wear in your time to do this?"

[sweariwontdie]

"Tanning? I don't know what that is. For swimming, well, I never learned how. Old clothes or nothing, I suppose, depending on the company."

[originaldrew]

"Tanning. It's getting your skin tan so it isn't pale. It's healthy."

[sweariwontdie]

Note how pale Armand is, and how well-covered up he is. "No, it isn't!" he says automatically, but he's not sure. "Why do you want to look like a farmer's wife?"

"It shows that the modern woman is athletic and youthful and not tied down inside her home."

He is genuinely confused. Little Etienne, who'd liked the walk, starts fussing a bit now that the scenery isn't changing. Armand moves him up against his shoulder and cuddles him.

"So you do that by taking off most of your clothes and getting too muich sun?"

[originaldrew]

"Ahuh. I have time on my hands and I'm letting the world know that I don't need to use it."

"Couldn't you take up a hobby instead?"

[originaldrew]

"I used to drive, but there's no car here. I used to sleuth, but I can't find any mysteries. And it's too warm to knit."

[sweariwontdie]

"Even my sister used to go riding. On horses that is." He fetched a pacifier out of his pocket for Etienne. "She wore more clothes for that, though." He isn't blushing, but that's mostly because he's been focusing on her face as they talked.

"Oh, well there are breeches if I wanted to ride."

[sweariwontdie]

"That's better than nearly nothing."

[originaldrew]

"Well, they wouldn't be practical for swimming."
