Armand answers her in French, slowly. "No, mademoiselle. We don't know where this Mansion is. Where are you from?"

Helen hisses at him in heavily accented French. "Don't tell anyone." How did he find out she was a girl?

He hadn't found out really. It was size and some confusion. "I apologize," he stammered, still in French.

"You speak English?" She is still speaking French. "I speak English now."

He smiles. "Both," he says in French. "I'm Armand. I apologize again for the confusion, young monsieur."

She didn't understand all of that. She switches to English. "English is easier. The good man let me speak it. Can you repeat what you said earlier, Pan?"

He switches to English. "I'm Armand. I apologize for the confusion earlier. Is this easier for you now?"

She smiles and continues in English with a very Polish accent. "Oh yes. This is much better, Pan. My name is Vasil." She still doesn't know if it's safe yet so she will continue being a boy for the present.

"Yes, I am. I am from Poland, Pan Armand."

"Welcome to the Mansion, then. I wish I could explain more. You can be comfortable here."

Helen looked a little unsure about her situation, but the set of her jaw showed that she was determined to make the best of it. "Is there a Domowoj (pronounced domovoi) here?"

"The spirit that protects the house. If there is not one here I shall have to attract one."

"I think you'd better ask the house first. I have not heard of anything like that but there's magic here."
