Shreve started to approach the food, but caught himself. Hadn't he been warned not to trust the food? Right. Constant danger around here. And Shreve was the sort of person to stay out of danger no matter what. But if this fellow is handing out brownies, he must be purporting that they're safe! So it's his word, at least in a figurative sense, against that of the man who says he's from a place called Oz and speaks in one-word sentences! They're in direct conflict with each other!

On the one hand, Shreve had only been here for a few days and didn't know what danger there was around here; why invite it? On the other hand, he was hungry.

Shreve didn't know what to make of the fellow's happy bouncing, but he was now in the possession of a tasty dessert. He was a bit disconcerted, however, by the strange feeling he had experienced when their hands had touched.

Shreve cast a confused eye on Epimetheus' bouncing, and had just taken a bite of the brownie when he felt a strange sensation on the top of his head. He swallowed it abruptly, and put up a hand to feel his head. His eyes widened. Under his fingers, he felt something sprouting.

Shreve caught sight of his pale reflection in the window, and saw that he had two furry ears growing on the top of his head, like a bear's. They seemed to be growing out from among his thick blond curls, and were approximately the same color. He moved his hand down the side of his face to touch his real ear-it was still there. Both of them were. He'd been called "four-eyes" before, when he was younger-but now he had four ears! I look like a…disheveled bear or something, he thought.

"What kind of poisoned cake is this?" he said, holding it at arm's length and looking at the multicolored dots that adorned it. I should have listened to the man from Oz and not eaten the food! he realised, a bit too late, and a bit wrong about the cause of this strange phenomenon.

The expression on Shreve's face went from dismayed to horrified as he felt Epimetheus's hand on his head. Dont touch me! he thought. But all he could manage to do was say "Er…no…" and give Epimetheus an uncomfortable look.

Shreve met Epimetheus's cheerful look with a glare. "How can you be happy at a time like this?" he said. "Well, I understand how you can. You're not the one who's just sprouted two extra body parts."

It was as though he could hear voices from the rushes: King Midas has ass's ears…King Midas has ass's ears… Just like that, except that he had ears like a bear's. Otherwise, he was just like King Midas in the story. Shreve remembered liking that story in his comparative youth. He anticipated hating it hereafter.

"Well, I suppose misery loves company," Shreve said, eyeing Epimetheus's newly sprouted ears. But he was more interested in getting rid of his own extra pair of ears than looking at Epimetheus's.
