Bonjour!
I awoke this morning to two incredible shocks. Firstly, I was alive! Secondly, I was not blind! I thanked the good God, and ran, still in my bed-dress, to the foot of the steps, shouting for my sister and Madam Magloire. Neither answered, though it was quite late enough to expect them awake, and impatient to share my miraculous transformation with someone, I ran out into the garden. I was astonished to meet a girl there, who begged me to quiet, and who told me an amazing tale. in very poor French.
I'm sure all of you have come to realize something similar, so I shall not recount it again.
But - anno domini 2005! I am anxious to meet the current Bishop, but Mlle. Typist tells me that would be the worst of bad ideas. I shall think about it.
The works of the Lord are certainly a mystery! I am nothing but glad I have another opportunity to do some good. And meet you all, as well, of course. I am Charles-Francois Myriel, the late Bishop of Digne-les-Bains.
Monsieur Victor Hugo has the best of political intentions, and a book involving me, as well.
