"-you are one of the most impudent rascals upon earth."

He had no sooner spoken these words than the ensign, together with a volley of curses, discharged a bottle full at the head of Jones, which, hitting him a little above the right temple, brought him instantly to the ground.

Tom staggered to his feet, clasping a hand to his head.  Blood was ( Read more... )

"Good god, man, what happened?" Richard moved to offer his assistance. Though the man's clothes were a good century out of fashion, he was an Englishman and clearly in distress.

"I am afraid my love's reputation was questioned and when I protested the cur attacked me. Thomas Jones at your service, would you happen to-Owwww!" Tom tried unsucessfully to blink away the blood in his eyes. "I appear to have glass in my wound."

Richard shook his head. "Yes, yes, introductions later. First, Mr. Jones, your wound needs cleaning and bandaging." He took the man's elbow and began steering him towards his room. Though he wasn't fully equipped as he'd like, he could clean the man up enough to get him to a proper surgeon.

"Your help is greatly appreciated. I have money to pay for any inconvenience I may cause and to pay for a barber."

"I'm afraid that a proper barber may be a bit difficult, but there should be someone to properly attend to your wound. I will stop the bleeding, and then we may seek out someone to stitch you." Richard chose not to try to explain the Mansion before Jones' head had stopped bleeding.

"That would be most appreciated." With two people offering assistance Tom was rather confused and didn't know what to do.

"Ah, I see." To Livia, he said, "I have some medical training, but if you know of a doctor nearby, perhaps we should fetch him as well? I am confident I can stop the bleeding, but it would be safest if someone else looked as well."

"If you have medical experience, you're the closest to a doctor that I know." She gestured to Tom with a wry look. "My plan involved a washcloth and a plaster."

Tom was trying not to cause any inconviences but his method of pressing his hand to his temple gently enough not to drive any shards of glass deeper but hard enough to stop the bleeding was not working very well. His vision was beginning to blur and he slumped onto the floor when his legs gave out. At least he hadn't swooned yet like he did when he broke his arm. Small mercies.

Richard looked worried. "...very well then. Help me get him to the kitchen. That's closest."

Tom staggered uncertainly to his feet and upon standing swayed for a moment catching his balance. "I can stand, sir. The lady need not exert herself on my account."

Livia ignored him and took him firmly by the arm.

"Don't you worry about 'the lady.' Just let's get you taken care of, hm?"

Tom's inborn sense of chivalry was very confused. He decided not to argue but his brain rebelled nonetheless. There would be many questions later on.

"Here, then, put your arm 'round my shoulder." Richard was a tallish man, and hoped he would be a good prop to get Jones somewhere to be bandaged. "We'll get you patched up quicker than you can say Jack Robinson."

Tom was considered tall for his generation as well and accepted the help gladly. His pride felt rather compromised but it would soon heal.

"Lead on."

Richard nodded to Armand, but was much more concerned about getting Jones patched up. He led him to the kitchen and sat him down before fetching the first aid kit. It was nothing much like the doctor's tools he had trained with, but cleaning a wound hadn't changed that much, surely.

He took tweezers for the glass and fetched a bowl with warm water and a clean cloth to clean the blood. "We may need shears as well... depending on how serious the gash is."
