Tacked up in the mansion, somewhere on a wall, is a note written in a lightly shaky pink script, on a piece of off-white glittery stationery. The note reads:

There are many creatures in the world which are surprising to come across. Blood-suckers, were-things, winged chicks, people with fins are a few. Among you now is a very strange creature. ( Read more... )

*reads the note, and narrows her eyes* How curious. What is a Mab, I wonder?

Mab flies up to the girl in a whirlwind of pink stars and taps her twice on the nose with a very tiny finger.

"I'm a Mab! What are you, stupid?"

Mary is momentarily stunned by the appearance of this strange creature, but not so much that she cannot direct a sour look in Mab's direction and sputter out a "N-no!"

"Well that's good news," Mab says, making her way over to the girl's shoulder where she stops and does a very showy-offy pirouette. "So. What's your name? -- not that I really care or anything," she says, examining an immaculate fingernail to show her unconcern.

"I am Mary Lennox," says the girl, as primly as possible. "And you are not a Mab--you are a fairy."

Mab scrunches her face up in an angry manner. "Well, Mary Lennox," she says with a sniff, "how do you know that I am not a Mab? And did you know that fairy, pixie, pisky, sprite, nymph-- I hate being called all of those?" Mab crosses her arms and lets out a dry laugh, that sounds more like a bell tinkle, due to her nature. "Of course you didn't know that. You're obviously not as smart as you claim to be."

Miss Mary is quite affronted, needless to say. "I am smart. There is a difference between being not smart and simply not knowing things, and you ought to be smart enough to know that." She sobers a little, in order to further examine the creature on her shoulder, "I have heard of fairies, but I have never heard of Mabs. If that is what you are."

She frowns and sits down on Mary's shoulder. "Alright, I might fit under that category. But stop calling me that! It's a totally rude phrase. Me and all the other ones like me hate those names." Mab stands up, regaining her confidence. "I'm still just a girl. I may be a little -- um -- size challenged but otherwise I'm just like you, don'tcha think?"

"I suppose," concedes Mary. "I shan't call you a fairy if that is what you aren't. I know I would not wish to be called a fairy when I am a Mary." She points to the note tacked on the wall. "Are you really lost, as it says?"

Mab shrugs, satisfied with Mary's response. "I guess I'm lost. I don't know where I am. I know I'm not in Los Angeles anymore. And I'm not in Ireland either. So. Where am I?"

"It is a Mansion, and no one quite knows where it is, but my friend Dickon and his animals are here, too, and people who can do magic."

"I like mansions," Mab says, giggling with glee. "And I guess people here aren't that surprised by things like me? I mean, if you have magicians or wizards or whatnot." She shrugs and tilts her head in question.

Mary shrugs back. "Some would not be, I suppose. Things like you are only make-believe in England. But you are here, on my shoulder, and so I believe in you now."
