'What the hell's that noise?' says I at about 3am yesterday. Sure enough, the cat has brought something in. Only the something is a medium sized, fully functioning wild rat. I can't catch it at that hour, and the cat, having established that I am pleased (after all, I came to see what the noise was) has cleared off to do something else.
I finally chased it into a plastic pot left under the kitchen sofa before I went to work and threw it out of the house, along with the cat to ensure that there was no rat for when I got back. There may be those of you who think this was unnecessarily cruel, but I had a job to go to and by far the easiest way to get rid of the rat permanently in the time offered without getting bitten was to let the cat do what comes naturally. Which it did.
Besides, if the bloody rat hadn't wanted an encounter with the cat it could have left at 3am when it first woke me up rather than hiding behind a bookcase.
