A full week in Kyoto

Many things have happened in this last week. I'm not one of the people who posts with photos everyday. I post updates as I feel I have a break in which to adequately organize my thoughts. However, I did go a little long between posts since I have to describe Thursday through Monday in this post.

Thursday we started out by watercoloring outside of the gate of Daishin-in but still within Myoshin-ji. Then, we went out to the temple of Nina-ji, it's not far by bike, to watercolor. I was with Daisuke-san for that watercoloring session. I think that I prefer being with Satoko-san, but in an attempt to further my education, I'm switching between them every other day. I chose to watercolor a large pavilion and ended up having some serious perspective issues that he was able to help me with. Although, I felt that my pavilion was more Daisuke's than mine. I was lucky enough to get to go out for ramen with Quin and Daisuke-san. Later on in the evening, we went out to the environs of the Takesei canal to see its evening character as well as some other areas that were relevant to our project. This included going to the Gion district where we saw some geiko and maiko and going to a preserved historical district with a canal.

Friday was a bit of an interesting day. We watercolored out at the Kamo river near where our project is. It was quite a bike ride to get there. I've already mentioned how chaotic the bike traffic is here and we are going around in a group of 12 people. Especially next to Kamogawa it is a park with large open paths that we were riding on. There was one slightly terrifying moment when Laura tried to crash into Jennifer because she was taking pictures while riding. She got a nice picture of me, several of Jennifer and one of herself before getting stuck together. It reminded me of when Mom and I crashed together many years ago, when I injured my pinky finger.

In a bit of a lazy day, we enjoyed our Saturday. We rode out to the Horikawa canal to see what had previously been done by UofO students. We also went to a market where I got totally fleeced on the purchase of some candied kumquats. They are delicious, but I paid far too much.

Sunday was my cultural day. I went with Jennifer to the theater to see a Noh drama in the morning. After lunch we were joined by Laura and the three of us went to a Vermeer exhibit at the municipal museum.
