Well, Winter is certainly here. The snow that hasn't been plowed it up past my knees. The dog has to basically hop through it as it goes up to her face. I stepped in this one part and I went through snow almost up near my waist.
Gary has been busy plowing although one day he plowed like 4 times and another just once in the morning with about the same snowfall.
I have this rake thing to clear off the back roof and it broke. And I rigged the tip of a snow shovel on it and was able to get some of the snow off but now the roof is leaking in the back room. I don't understand why that room never leaked when i poured rain but now it does just because of the snow? So I have about 6 various containers collecting all the drips.
That room is blocked off with a drop cloth and I partially opened a window thinking that will freeze the water. Have any of the other New Englanders had to deal with such a thing? I don't understand how it melts as the room is pretty darn cold and far away from the wood stove.
I've been cooking for myself and the last run to the grocery store I got only staples so I'm having to cook for myself. I'm getting a bit better - today I cooked a chicken split fryer and it was truly delicious. I cook everything on the woodstove to save electricity but I fear my electric bill is going to be high for Dec as I used that electric heater in vain to keep the pipes from freezing - plus now I constantly have lights on plus a workstation with dual monitors sucking electricity from the grid.
Work is going well. I've gotten into a rhythm slowly but surely. I think I may have enough contracting through Jan and Feb - keep your toes crossed that the economy doesn't tank anymore. It's really bad out there kids. I tend to be a NPR news junkie but sometimes I get tired of it and go through periods of not listening at all....and I'm at that point right now.
I never really lived alone until 2005 and I was pretty anxious about it back then. Of course I was living in an upstairs apartment of a friend so it wasn't like I was totally isolated. Well - I am now. I haven't really had human contact since Tuesday in which I did errands in town. And I do pretty well with it to be honest.
Tomorrow I really could stand to get more groceries - plus find a top for the snow rake. And bring in more wood - more snow is coming tomorrow night apparently. Also I need to clean out the bottom of the chimney and check the creosote buildup. The gas furnace doesn't work so I'm 100% reliant on the wood heat which is a bit stressful as I worry something might happen with the stove or chimney.
And did I mention I got DSL up here?? IT SMOKES....I'm consistently getting almost 3 meg downstream. I ordered it the day after they announced they offered it up here. It's allowed me to stream the entire season 4 of LOST I worked this week. Plus somebody gave me their Netflix login (*wink wink*) so now I can stream their "Instant Whatever" movies. I'm finally going to watch the Exorcist (seen parts before) and try to scare the hell out of myself - being totally alone and isolated is the ideal setting for a good horror film.
Oh - and I only have about an 7 foot path to shovel from my door to the plowed area. The other day I opened the door to the mudroom to see snow was up past the door. There is good reason all the doors here open to the inside.....so when you get totally snowed in you can still open the door to dig yourself out. ;)
Edit: The shower drain cleared out!!
