Its not big money dude, its like 45,000 a year and you come out with ZERO savings generally.
It depends on your perspective, my sister and three of my good friends have done it. Go to Japan, get a working VISA and skip and change jobs at will. JET & NOVA are kind of jobs based around tokenism and is hard/boring work for little reward. There are heaps of jobs in publishing in Japan but anyway you'll find out for yourself. All the best of luck and I'll probably see you there.
One of the only benefits of JET is the three year working visa. Once that is out of the way, finding other positions should be easy. Are there other easy ways of getting work visas? (that don't require schlepping all over the place and spending money on lodging in the meantime)
Okay just make sure that you can get work outside of the terms of the jet programme. you can be sent home if you try and get other work etc... You can get working visas other ways. I have some information on it I can email you tomorrow if you like. I am David by the way.
I just talked to my sis (in Japan) and she said that because JET is governmental it means that it is harder to get out of your contract BUT you can after one year and then get other work in Japan - plus your japanese will be upskilled heaps by then. Don't do the teaching bizzo because its boring, do the CIR job. Sometime you end up in the countryside which some people like but I dunno if you are gay you might not like it. Japan is conservative in a really weird way so its up to you. I'll tell you if I have any more updates.
Thanks. I don't know nearly enough Japanese for a CIR position. Though I'm not gay, I'm certainly not one to be found in the country, either. I would most likely request a city placement. Does your sis like her housing?
No offence about the gay thing, its just the last thing we discussed. She is not on it anymore she married a japanese guy and she lives in Okinawa and she loves her house. She went on JET then quit it and came back went back on NOVA (nightmare) and then quit that and worked freelance/and in publishing. HARDWORK she said but it was hard to make ends meet but good experience. Good way to imrpove your Japanese. She teaches from home now and they are coming back in 3 years to raise a family here.
