Having watched all the Doctor Who that we can over Netflix, we moved on to Torchwood.

Hmm.

I like the premise (for a TV show anyway), and I like Captain Jack Harkness. But so far I don't really like any of the other characters. Toshiko is the most sympathetic at this point. The first episode made it clear that Owen was practically a rapist, and even without that he was a horrible creep and an asshole. So I liked Gwen well enough until she hooked up with him. Like it wasn't bad enough that she's cheating on her boyfriend.

I get having those character development moments in an action show, where team members bicker, where the show follows them back home and you see their family, blah blah. That's when you see their weaknesses, usually, because action show characters are usually to busy being badass otherwise. But so far Torchwood is more dysfunction than action and with the exception of Captain Jack they are far from badass, ever. Is it a side effect of living in a country that bans butcher knives that you can't make a decent action show? For a super elite team they sure accept a lot of people with personality disorders. And they've set the bar awfully high for what you need to do to get fired. Betray the entire team and endanger the entire world - that'll slide.

I really hope they get beyond this 'getting to know you' phase, because so far the thing I'm getting to know isn't a thing I really care about.
