I've never been one to go crazy over New Year's. What's the big deal about the natural progression of time? The timing of the beginning of another year is arbitrary anyway.
Last night was pretty awesome though. The snow dissapated enough to make it possible to walk outside. The sub zero windchill was an obstacle but with four layers and multiple hoods and earmuffs I was able to stay alive.
Jason and I went to Wagamamas in Harvard Square for dinner because we had a 2 for 1 coupon that expired yesterday. We both tried new dishes which was monumental for him because he is such a picky eater. I'm proud of him for finally challenging himself. Luckily we both enjoyed what we ordered, after making our waiter crazy with a ton of questions about every ingredient and then requests to eliminate certain things and add others.
For dessert we were really awful and went to Finale. They had a new little cake called Finale Forrest that was chocolate cake with cherry marmalade and bavarian creme. Jason gobbled it up in four seconds but I took my time, sipping hot chocolate in between bites. It was fantastic. Almost worth the ridiculous price lol.
Unfortunately no shops and not too many other restaurants were open in Harvard so we headed over to the theatre district early for the Joel McHale show. We arrived about 35 minutes early and there was already a crazy mass of people waiting in the lobby. We had to push inside the theatre so we didn't become icicles in the cold. (I absolutely cannot stress enough how cold it was outside. We were going to get into that lobby if we had to knock over a pregnant woman and an old lady with a walker.)
Our seats weren't the greatest, but we enjoyed the show a lot. Joel is wicked funny. I was a little apprehensive about his stand up routine since I love him on The Soup so much, but he did a good job of blending his own material with the hilarious commentary on semi-celebrities that everyone loves so much.
We got out of the theatre at 11:45 which was awkward because neither of us wanted to be on the T when the clock struck 12. So we braced ourselves against the wind and trekked up Tremont until we reached a medium sized gathering of equally frozen people watching some unknown band on the gazebo. I have no idea how they played instruments and sang for hours outside. The guitar player didn't have gloves on! I have to assume he was a robot.
There was a large screen on the common showing commercials for weird products that I can't remember, so obviously the commercials weren't that good lol. A countdown clock to the new year was on the bottom of the screen. So we waited and at 30 seconds left it switched into a second by second countdown. When it got to 10 everyone shouted until lift off yadda yadda yadda
Jason and I managed to make up like all the other couples despite being so heavily bundled up. Our lips nearly froze together. Then while we were walking back to the T he of course had to pick up snow and shove it down the back of my pants. Apparently he didn't mind risking loss of use of that part of my anatomy.
We were home by 12:15, absolutely exhausted. Flipped through the channels on TV to catch glimpses of best of list shows and reairings of countdowns for the other time zones in the U.S.
Today was nothing special. Jason had plans to go snowboarding all day so I was actually productive this morning and cleaned up around my disgusting room. Then my greedy side made me pick up a shift at work, which will be done at 7. If it wasn't still freezing out I would go somewhere but all I really want to do is curl up with some pasta and watch the tail end of the Private Practice marathon on SoapNet. Then maybe I'll read more of my Joyce Carol Oates book. My greatest joy at the moment is being able to read books of my own choosing. :)
Only three days left before co-op. Obviously I'm ridiculously nervous, but it is what it is. No one is expecting me to dominate from the beginning. I will be subservient, listen carefully and force myself to keep things in perspective. This is a temporary position and as long as I don't sexually harass someone, come to work drunk or fail to show up for weeks I am not going to get fired. It is a rare situation where the job will give me more than I will give to the company.
Now all I have to do is figure out when I can meet with my Spanish professor from the Fall so she can ask me whatever questions she has before she fills out my recommendation for Spain. She is pretty much the only thing keeping me from completing the application. I gave her the form at the end of November and she said nothing for almost a month until I emailed her about the status of it and then she informed me she had questions. I would've had so much time to meet with her while classes were still in session or during exam week. But now I'll be working a 9 to 5 so what the hell am I supposed to do? I need to do it sometime this month, but I don't want to look like an idiot asking to leave early when I've just started the position. Guess I'll have to wait until I get a sense of how they would react to such a request.
It will be interesting to see how things go when my weekly schedule goes into effect. I'm considering joining Senate again, so that would be Monday nights. Then I have my Improv class Tuesday nights. All throughout January Jason has a show on Wednesday nights at ImprovBoston. On Thursdays is the Improv incubator (haha are you seeing a theme here?). I hope I can meet more people and continue to work on my confidence issues and such.
And maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to write again.
