It will, as it is often the case these days, be a good weekend for music.
i don't think i need to mention the
big show tonight, so i won't (much). Just don't try to go if you don't already have tickets - i checked for tickets at the beginning of the week on a whim (i have a previous engagement involving international churchy type work/i've seen
DCfC three times now/other excuses involving their recent albums, the amount of kids who will be there attempting to crush my person, etc, etc) and they're sold out. Unless, of course, you know people who still have several. Then they aren't. But i will miss not seeing
Ra Ra Riot. i recall
ranking their debut album pretty high, and i actually enjoy that release much more than
the other New Yorky type band of a similar nature that is seemingly more popular.
Look, before you even, i'm not one of those snobby "i liked them when they were still part of the
Bellingham scene, and Ben Gibbard was in Jay and Joe Chilcote's
collective shadow* but now they're total sell-outs" kids. i'm really not. Besides, i didn't know about them until
The Photo Album came out, so clearly i'm not that cool. Granted, i was in Montana at the time and wouldn't know about KEXP for another few years (again, not cool), but still. i just honestly haven't gotten into their past couple of albums, but if you are thinking of going, please do enjoy yourself. They really are a lot of fun live. And RRR is going to rock - i'm a bit jealous of you.
BUT
There are other venues besides Martin Centre at Gonzaga University to consider. For instance, our two great standbys,
The Empyrean and the
Caterina. i'm not really sure what's happening tonight at our favorite late night neighborhood coffee shop, but tomorrow (Saturday) i saw something about a
Petals 2 People pre Earth Day benefit type thing that i'll know people at. Sounds cool.
Tonight at the Caterina
Skeletonbreath from New York will be performing. At 8.oo pm. For $5. They describe themselves as "
Transylvanian Surf Rock," and from what i've heard, will be more than worth it. i have a feeling that some of the truly cool kids will be there, for they probably aren't that into the larger bands and will dig the darker, violin infused melodic instrumentals. i'd bet the scenesters will be at GU tonight, which is just as well.

Then on Saturday night, again at the winery, the
Mon Chéri cd release party shall be held. Also at 8.oo pm. MC are our
newestish local indiepop darlings (no offense
Karli and
Kaylee!), and if you're at all into that indie folk/nu-jazz thing than i would suggest being there. Excitement abound! i have not yet had the chance to see them perform but they do sound rather amazing, and have quite the buzz these days.
So yeah. Get out there and check it out. Our music scene is getting great, but it will only keep going in that direction if people actually come out to shows, myself included. And always remember to have the fun!
*i actually like
Revolutionary Hydra better than Death Cab for Cutie, even though DCfC often makes up part of RH, at least as of 5 years ago. So much so that i may actually try to get
The PEEFs online, because i've checked pretty much everywhere, from Missoula to Bellingham to Oly to about 1/3 of the good places in Seattle and nobody seems to carry any of their albums. Which is sad, because they're just so gosh darn good.
