In Which I Might be Employed

Shadowing happened today.

I started in Records Processing. It's fairly repetitive. Data entry, working from either electronic or physical records, though apparently they are moving towards eliminating the physical part. But it's a new department, so this is going to change over time. They told me that I didn't want to work in Account Services, because it was awful.

Moved over to Account Services and sat for an hour listening to calls and watching someone help clients. Mostly billing questions, account information updates, etc. A lot less scary than I thought it would be, though most of the acronyms and the like flew right over my head. The department is a heck of a lot more lively than Records Processing, though it's about 98% women, so I felt a bit out of place. Not least of which because I was sitting on the busiest aisle in the department and had to keep getting out of everyone's way. Everyone there told me that I didn't want to work in Records Processing, because it was awful.

After that I spoke with one of the supervisors, and then the director of Account Services, then in a surprise move, they took me back downstairs to meet with the VP of Billing. She asked me what I thought, and then got right to the point.

Basically, the Records Processing position starts lower than the other but has more room for growth, as it is a new department, and they are still feeling things out. Also, she feels that with my interests degree-wise, I'd be moving in the right direction by taking that position. While she feels that I could no doubt be very good in Account Services, she doesn't see that as being the direction I want to go, based on her interactions with me. She's correct, of course. She didn't get to be a VP by not being observant.

So she essentially told me that she's offering me the position in Records Processing, though she can't officially offer it. It has to come through the staffing agency, after my background check comes back. And even though I know exactly what's on my background check, and don't think it will be an issue, I'm still a nervous wreck. I should know something by tomorrow, or Monday at the latest!
