2013 Books!

Urban fantasies, dystopias, and... not much more, oh my!

1. Fey - Paul Kidd
He writes sarcastic silliness. I think I like him!

2. Libyrinth - Pearl North
Pearl North, under her adult-title name, is frequently on panels at the local cons. I really like listening to her contributions. Last year, she started giving me a wave hello. I ended up introducing myself to her at this year's ConFusion, and discovered that she had come to recognize me as the one who's always sewing something interesting. I decided that I needed to read her new young adult book series. I like it!

3. The Boy from Ilysies - Pearl North

4. Dust Girl - Sarah Zettel
This is another one of the authors who I frequently see on panels at local cons. Take a standard YA girl. Make her mixed-race in the 1930's Dust Bowl... and make her half-fae as well. This was a great cross between urban fantasy and historical fiction!

5. Moon Called - Patricia Briggs

6. The Fire Horse Girl - Kay Honeyman
This is one of the books I have on my shelf of historical fiction at school, having recently aquired it from the book fair. Starts in China and ends in San Francisco, in the 1920's.

7. Divergent - Veronica Roth
I devoured this book, but we all know that I have a thing for dystopian YA! It wasn't anywhere near as good as Hunger Games, but I still enjoyed it.

8. Alpha and Omega - Patricia Briggs
9. Cry Wolf - Patricia Briggs
10. Hunting Ground - Patricia Briggs
11. Blood Bound - Patricia Briggs
12. Iron Kissed - Patricia Briggs (seeing a trend here?)
13. Bone Crossed - Patricia Briggs
14. Silver Borne - Patrica Briggs
15. River Marked - Patricia Briggs
16. Fair Game - Patricia Briggs
17. Frost Burned - Patricia Briggs
Oh yes, all of the Mercy-verse books in order. I'll have to read them all over again, of course, as more of them come out. :) I <3 that coyote girl and her werewolves!

18. Readicide: How Schools are Killing Reading and What You Can Do About It - Kelly Gallagher
This was thoroughly depressing. Sometimes, I hate being part of the education system.

19. Insurgent - Veronica Roth

20. Homeland - Cory Doctorow

21. Beauty and the Werewolf - Mercedes Lackey

22. Girl in the Arena - Lise Haines

23. Joust - Mercedes Lackey
Why do I take the time to reread old series? I mean, on some levels, the Jousters books aren't exactly that awesome. But there's always something interesting and new that I pick up.

24. The Blood of Ten Chiefs - an Elfquest prose anthology

25. Wolfling - Gordon R. Dickson
I was hung up on the word "Wolfling" and discovered two books by that name. This was classic 60's sci-fi, with the super smart and strong, silent guy hero rescuing Earth from a threat from another world with his super smarts and physical skill, and a girl who ends up being his "reward." I usually don't have a problem with Mary Jane characters, but this one wasn't all that and a bag of chips.

26. The Wolfling - Sterling North
This was more enjoyable, although really not that great either. I remember enjoying Rascal way back when. It makes me wonder if I'd dislike it now, and whether I might also dislike a lot of the mid-century animal books that I loved in late elementary and middle school (like all of Marguerite Henry's and Walter Farley's horse books, Jim Kjelgaard's dog books, and oodles of other ones). The characters aren't terribly interesting, and there's minimal plot.

27. Wolfsong (Blood of Ten Chiefs, Volume 2)

28. Alta - Mercedes Lackey
More ancient Egypt and dragons!

29. The Nine Lives of Chloe King - Volume 1: The Fallen - Celia Thomson
This was mentioned in various Young Adult panels at ConFusion this year, so I finally tracked it down. As I described it to one friend, "Fluff, but fun fluff."
30. The Nine Lives of Chloe King - Volume 2: The Stolen - Thomson
31. The Nine Lives of Chloe King - Volume 3: The Chosen - Thomson

32. Sanctuary - Mercedes Lackey

33. Aerie - Lackey

34. Red Shirts - John Scalzi
Awesome hilarity!

35. Shadowfever - Karen Marie Moning
I wasn't sure about including this, as it was an audio book that I listened to on my Christmas road trip, but I decided to add it in at the last minute. After all, it completes a series I read a few years ago.
